Cobblers Past

History Never Forgotten

  • Year Founded: 2002
  • Nickname: The Dons, The Wombles
  • Major Honours: League Two Play-off winners : 2015–16

As so often in the Wimbledon story, it all came down to a penalty kick. In the final moments of 2012/13, Jack Midson stepped up to score from 12 yards. It was a goal that not only secured victory over Fleetwood Town but preserved the new Dons’ hard-won League Two status. The wave of euphoria as relieved fans invaded the pitch to celebrate evoked memories of good times past.

Just two years earlier, it was Danny Kedwell whose final penalty kick in the shoot-out decided the Conference play-off final against Luton Town at the City of Manchester Stadium. Such penalty heroics were hardly something new for older supporters, who remembered the saves from the spot that immortalised the names of Dickie Guy and Dave Beasant in FA Cup folklore.

It was preserving that glorious past that drove followers of the club to start again in the summer of 2002 after a specially appointed three-man FA commission shocked football fans everywhere by allowing the old Wimbledon FC to relocate to a Buckinghamshire new town. Determined not to let a proud 104-year history die, Dons supporters organised themselves and within just six weeks AFC Wimbledon – a club the commission had declared would be “not in the wider interests of football” – was born.

Northampton 1 Oxford 0 – League One

Sam Hoskins scored the only goal of the game early in the second half as the Cobblers claimed their third win from four home games to move two points above the bottom four and dent Oxford’s play-off hopes.

Oxford were convinced they had taken a fourth-minute lead when Rob Atkinson’s header appeared very close to crossing the line before being scrambled away.

Atkinson also saw a shot deflected wide but Northampton grew into the game and went close themselves when Mark Marshall’s shot hit a post and Ryan Watson put the rebound into the side netting.

Jonathan Mitchell tipped Daniel Agyei’s effort around a post but Northampton went ahead 10 minutes into the second half when Hoskins latched on to Danny Rose’s flick-on and picked out the bottom corner.

Oxford were out of sorts and struggled to respond, creating only one half chance late on as captain Elliott Moore headed wide from a corner.

AFC Wimbledon 2 Charlton 2 – League One

Charlton, playing under Nigel Adkins for the first time, took the lead through Jayden Stockley’s 10th-minute header, before Ryan Longman levelled five minutes later.

Diallang Jaiyesimi restored the Addicks’ lead midway through the first half, but the game’s star man Longman deservedly brought the Dons level.

Wimbledon had already gone close through Ayoub Assal before the excellent Liam Millar delivered a wicked cross for Stockley to prod home at the near post.

Longman showed strength and poise in the build-up to curling past Ben Amos for the equaliser, but Millar was soon at it again.

He cut in from the right to land a cross right on Jaiyesimi’s toes and he smashed past Nik Tzanev from six yards.

Mark Robinson’s men were much better after the break. Longman drilled one across the Charlton goal-line, before he latched on to a woeful back pass from Akin Famewo and tapped past a stranded Amos.

In a frantic finish, Wimbledon forward Joe Pigott crashed one against a post and Chuks Aneke did likewise at the other end, but neither side could force a winner.

2020 – The Cobblers 2 AFC Wimbledon 2

A flying start saw the Dons take the lead after just 20 seconds when Cian Bolger lost possession just outside the penalty box and Luke O’Neill nipped in before setting up Ethan Chislett who fired the ball into the far corner.

Cobblers debutant Benny Ashley-Seal volleyed narrowly wide in response before the home side levelled in the 19th minute as Matty Warburton curled a delightful 25-yard free-kick into the top corner.

Ryan Longman squandered a good chance to hit back immediately but it was not long until Wimbledon regained the lead, with Joe Piggott teeing-up Nesta Guinness-Walker and he calmly slotted home.

Shane McLoughlin missed a great chance to extend the visitors’ lead and he was made to pay for that miss after 32 minutes when Ricky Korboa blasted into the bottom corner after Wimbledon failed to clear their lines.

The second half was a little less frenetic but Fraser Horsfall headed over for Northampton before substitute Sam Hoskins volleyed the best chance wide.
