Northampton Town Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of former Northampton Town player Paul Matthews.
Matthews began his football career relatively late, having played rugby at school, before going on to spend nine seasons with Leicester City.
He later represented Mansfield Town and Rotherham United before joining the Cobblers on loan. Northampton manager Clive Walker, who had played alongside Matthews at Mansfield, brought him to the County Ground in what proved to be the final spell of his Football League career.
After leaving the professional game, Matthews continued playing with Heanor and Oadby and continued to be a regular spectator at the foxes.
We send our sincerest condolences to Paul’s family and friends.
