Ahead of Northampton Town’s latest meeting with Newport County, Cobblers Past takes a look at a selection of players who have pulled on the shirt of both clubs.
Ben Tozer
Ben Tozer initially joined the Cobblers on loan from Newcastle United and made his debut on one of the most memorable nights in the club’s recent history – the League Cup victory over Liverpool at Anfield in 2010.
He made the move permanent in June 2011 and went on to make 173 appearances, scoring six times during five years with Northampton.
Tozer departed Sixfields for Newport County in 2016, where he spent two seasons and made 60 appearances, scoring four goals. (Cobblers Past)
Regan Poole
Regan Poole began his senior career with Newport County, making 15 appearances before earning a move to Manchester United in 2015.
The defender later arrived at Sixfields on a season-long loan from United in the summer of 2017.
Able to operate in defence or midfield, Poole made 22 appearances in claret and white during his time with the Cobblers. (Cobblers Past)
Sam Foley
Midfielder Sam Foley enjoyed a successful spell with Newport County between 2009 and 2012, initially joining the Exiles on loan.
He went on to make more than 120 appearances for Newport and scored an impressive 36 goals.
Foley later joined Northampton Town from Port Vale in the summer of 2017 and went on to make more than 40 appearances for the Cobblers. (Cobblers Past)
Ryan Gilligan
Ryan Gilligan arrived at Northampton Town in 2005 after the Cobblers took over the final year of his scholarship from Watford.
The midfielder became a familiar face at Sixfields during a seven-year stay, making more than 180 appearances and scoring 20 goals.
Gilligan also spent a short period with Newport County on loan from Northampton, making six appearances during his spell in South Wales. (Cobblers Past)
Marlon Jackson
Striker Marlon Jackson joined Northampton Town on loan from Bristol City in 2011.
His stay at Sixfields was brief, with Jackson making six appearances and scoring once for the Cobblers.
Five years later, Jackson joined Newport County in 2016. He spent two years with the Exiles and made 28 appearances. (Cobblers Past)
Ryan Haynes
Another name to have represented both clubs is Northampton-born full-back Ryan Haynes.
Haynes joined the Cobblers in the summer of 2022 following his time with Newport County, adding another name to the growing list of players to have represented both sides. (Cobblers Past)
From long-serving Cobblers such as Ben Tozer and Ryan Gilligan to players who represented the clubs at different stages of their careers, there have been plenty of links between Northampton Town and Newport County over the years.
