Cobblers Past

History Never Forgotten

Last 6 meetings with AFC Wimbledon

2020 – The Cobblers 2 AFC Wimbledon 2

A flying start saw the Dons take the lead after just 20 seconds when Cian Bolger lost possession just outside the penalty box and Luke O’Neill nipped in before setting up Ethan Chislett who fired the ball into the far corner.

Cobblers debutant Benny Ashley-Seal volleyed narrowly wide in response before the home side levelled in the 19th minute as Matty Warburton curled a delightful 25-yard free-kick into the top corner.

Ryan Longman squandered a good chance to hit back immediately but it was not long until Wimbledon regained the lead, with Joe Piggott teeing-up Nesta Guinness-Walker and he calmly slotted home.

Shane McLoughlin missed a great chance to extend the visitors’ lead and he was made to pay for that miss after 32 minutes when Ricky Korboa blasted into the bottom corner after Wimbledon failed to clear their lines.

The second half was a little less frenetic but Fraser Horsfall headed over for Northampton before substitute Sam Hoskins volleyed the best chance wide.

2018 – AFC Wimbledon 1 The Cobblers 3

This was the Cobblers’ fourth win in six games and it allowed them to move three points clear of the relegation zone and above the Dons, who are now just one point above fourth-bottom Oldham.

Northampton were awarded an early penalty when John-Joe O’Toole was judged to have been brought down by Dons goalkeeper George Long, with Matt Grimes slamming his spot-kick into the top corner.

The home side drew level just two minutes into the second half when Lyle Taylor’s corner found its way to Deji Oshilaja, who headed in at the far post from close range.

But Northampton restored their lead just after the hour mark when O’Toole flicked the ball back for Matt Crooks, who finished neatly into the bottom corner.

The Cobblers then gave themselves breathing space as excellent move up the pitch ended with O’Toole finding Powell, who passed a precise effort past Long.

2017- The Cobblers 0 AFC Wimbledon 1

The Dons had failed to win any of their previous 12 meetings against Northampton since reforming in 2002 but Forrester’s excellent finish – their first goal in five League One games – was enough to take the spoils from a poor game and lift them out of the relegation zone.

Forrester dragged a harmless early shot wide but it was not until the 43rd minute when either goalkeeper was brought into action as Wimbledon’s George Long tipped over a venomous drive by Daniel Powell.

The second-half did not improve much as a spectacle but a mix-up in the Northampton defence proved costly as it allowed Forrester to pick up possession and drive forward before beating Matt Ingram with a brilliant finish into the bottom corner after 61 minutes.

Ash Taylor immediately squandered a fine chance to level while Lyle Taylor fired into the side-netting as Wimbledon withstood late pressure to clinch a first victory at Sixfields.

2017 – AFC Wimbledon 0 The Cobblers 1

Taylor’s spot-kick, awarded for Chris Robertson’s handball four minutes from full-time, delivered the Cobblers their first away win of 2017 and moves them closer to safety, while keeping the Dons 13th.

Luke Williams sent an early shot wide and Tom Soares did likewise for the hosts but both sides lacked the quality to break the other down in a sluggish first half.

Wimbledon made most of the running but it was their visitors who came closest with Taylor’s free-kick sailing over and Michael Smith’s first-time shot curling narrowly wide.

A more open second half saw James Shea beat away Taylor’s free-kick and Adam Smith keep out a header from Darius Charles.

Just as it seemed these two would play out their second 0-0 draw of the season, a needless handball from Robertson presented the visitors with the chance to win it, and Taylor made no mistake

2016 – The Cobblers 0 AFC Wimbledon 0

The visitors created the better openings in a game in which both defences were on top but were barely stretched.

Northampton started brightly, Kenji Gorre testing former Cobblers goalkeeper Ryan Clarke before John-Joe O’Toole headed over from a corner.

Wimbledon replied with Lyle Taylor heading over but at the other end Gorre skipped past three defenders before being denied by Clarke’s flying save.

Wimbledon improved as the half progressed – Darius Charles was off target with a header, Jake Reeves had two efforts deflected past the uprights and Tom Elliott headed wide.

Taylor tested Adam Smith after the restart and Reeves fired wide as the visitors picked up from where they left off.

Cobblers struggled to create anything in the final third with Marc Richards and Alex Revell getting little support and no joy against Paul Robinson and Charles.

Elliott went close to breaking the deadlock with a shot on the turn which flew past the post.

Wimbledon posed the greater threat in a poor second half and Robinson’s late header hit the bar before being scrambled clear.

2016 – The Cobblers 1  AFC Wimbledon 1

The Dons made a bright start with strikers Tom Elliott and Taylor both denied by Adam Smith in the opening 10 minutes while Nicky Adams fired wide from 20 yards for the home side.

Northampton improved as the half wore on and only a fine low save from Kelle Roos prevented James Collins from heading the opener.

The Dons goalkeeper was beaten moments later, though, as John-Joe O’Toole turned home Joel Byrom’s corner on the cusp of half-time.

As in the first, Wimbledon made a bright start to the second half with Smith again called into action, this time saving from Paul Robinson’s header.

Luke Prosser had a header cleared off the line at the other end but Dons were soon back on level terms when, on 62 minutes, Taylor finished brilliantly after bursting down the left.

Elliott twice went close to putting the visitors ahead immediately after the goal, first having a header blocked on the line before firing into the side-netting.

A frantic second half swung end to end as both sides had chances but neither could find the elusive winner.
