There have been several associated with the town of Stevenage. Stevenage Town was formed in 1884. They absorbed Stevenage Rangers in 1955 and moved to Broadhall Way. The club went into liquidation in ’68 and by 1976, the current iteration Stevenage Borough were born.

Stevenage has a rich sporting heritage away from football. The Hertfordshire town is the birthplace of many big names in the world of sport. Five-time Ryder Cup winner Ian Poulter grew up in the area, as well as other footballers such as Ashley Young and Jack Wilshere. The standout on Stevenage’s list is undoubtedly seven-time Formula One champion Sir Lewis Hamilton.

Stevenage Borough started its life on the modest grounds around the King George V playing fields with roped off games in the Chiltern League. A change of competition followed to the Wallspan Southern Combination and by 1980 the club returned to Broadhall Way.

After successes in the United Counties League and Isthmian League saw Borough promoted to the Conference in the mid-nineties. Despite winning the 1996/96 Conference title, Stevenage were denied a place in the Football League because of ground regulations.

In 2010, the club rebranded, dropping the ‘Borough’ from the name and in 2011 they were finally promoted to League Two. Since elevation to the Football League, The Boro have had a brief stint in League One, before returning to the basement tier where they have resided ever since.

Northampton 2 Mansfield 2 – League Two – Sixfields Stadium – 16.10.21

Northampton returned to winning ways with a victory over struggling Mansfield.

Aaron McGowan fizzed the home side into the lead with a low strike from distance midway through the first half before fellow defender Fraser Horsfall secured the points thanks to a late header.

The Cobblers climb back into the top 10 in League Two while Mansfield have now gone 12 games without a win in all competitions.

The first half was a slow-burner but Northampton went ahead with their first shot on 23 minutes when McGowan received the ball from Shaun McWilliams and drilled a 20-yard shot into the bottom corner.

Oli Hawkins headed Mansfield’s best chance of the half straight at Liam Roberts in the home goal before Northampton were inches from doubling their lead as Kion Etete slammed against the crossbar early in the second half.

The Cobblers did eventually double their lead when Mitch Pinnock’s brilliant cross was headed home by Horsfall at the back post with 15 minutes remaining.

Oldham 3 Stevenage 3 – League Two – Boundary Park – 16.10.21

A miserable afternoon for Mansfield saw them held to a goalless draw at home to fellow League Two strugglers Oldham and lose midfielder George Maris to a serious head injury.

The Stags, who have now gone 11 games without a win in all competitions – and were without eight key players – began the first half well and Danny Johnson fired just wide after 11 minutes.

But they were rocked a minute later when Maris suffered a clash of heads with team-mate James Clarke and a worrying 13-minute hold-up followed before he was carried off on a stretcher.

Oldham eventually took a grip and five minutes before the break, Harrison McGahey turned the ball against the woodwork from six yards after Carl Piergianni had headed a Jamie Bowden corner towards him.

Rhys Oates sent a good chance wide for Mansfield after turning his marker.

But in the 14 first-half added minutes, home goalkeeper Nathan Bishop parried a shot from Piergianni after the Stags failed to clear Benny Couto’s long throw.

Then, on a breakaway, Zak Dearnley forced another save with David Keillor-Dunn sending the follow-up wide.

In a scrappy second half of few chances, Harry Charsley forced Jayson Leutwiler to save low efforts after 68 and 81 minutes as the home side dominated without reward.

Northampton 0 Stevenage 0 – Papa Johns Trophy – Sixfields Stadium – 17.11.20

A place in the knockout stage of this seasons Papa John’s Trophy was up for grabs for both Northampton Town and Stevenage as the sides met at the PTS Academy Stadium on Tuesday night. Going into the final group game the sides were level on 3 points with MK Dons having already qualified.

Ricky Holmes made his first start since returning to the club as Keith Curle named a strong side. Benny Ashley-Seal was the only other change while Nicky Adams made his 100th appearance for the club.

Before the game got under way there was a minute’s silence as the club paid their respects to long-serving former physio Denis Casey who sadly passed away on Sunday.

The first chance of the night fell to Stevenage and Femi Akinwande but having gone through one-on-one and rounded Jonathan Mitchell the Cobblers keeper managed to get back just in time to make the save.

In a tight first half Stevenage, managed by former Cobblers striker Alex Revell were making it difficult for the home side but Cian Bolger fired wide from 30-yards and Ashley-Seal laid the ball back for Adams who saw his shot parried by Jamie Cumming on the half-hour mark, Jack Sowerby unable to find the target on the follow-up.

Bolger blocked a shot from Remeao Hutton in the early stages of the second half before Keith Curle made his first change, Shaun McWilliams on for Ryan Watson. Chris Lines and Caleb Chukwuemeka came on for the final half an hour in place of Holmes and Ashley-Seal.

Cumming saved a Michael Harriman header and Danny Rose curled a shot just over the bar as the Cobblers enjoyed a spell of pressure while Arthur Iontton shot wide for Stevenage after being played in by Akinwande. Neither side could however force a winner in normal time, meaning a penalty shoot out would decide who progressed to the knockout stages as group runners-up. The Cobblers won 4-2 on penalties

Samuel Barrott

Samuel Barrott has been appointed Match Referee for the Sky Bet League Two fixture between Stevenage and Northampton Town this Tuesday at Sixfields Stadium.

The referee is currently officiating in his second EFL campaign after debuting last season. So far this campaign, Barrott has taken charge of eleven games, handing out forty-one yellow cards in total. His red card is yet to be shown.

Barrott’s last Cobblers game was on the last day of the 2020/21 season at the Stadium of Light in the Cobblers 1-1 Draw with Sunderland, thanks to Sam Hoskins goal on 84 minutes. He also was the man in the middle when MK Dons beat the Cobblers 4-3 at Stadium MK in February 2020 when he didn’t show a single card.

His most recent Stevenage fixture came towards the end of last season as Alex Revell’s men travelled to Mansfield and suffered a 1-0 defeat due to a Ryan Sweeney first-half goal. Three yellow cards were handed out that day.

Barrott will be joined by Assistants Ravel Cheosiaua and Marc Wilson with Andrew Hendley as Fourth Official.
