Cobblers Past

History Never Forgotten

Cobblers could make it the best start in 30 years.

Jon Brady’s side has won all three of their first games. With that 1-0 opening day win at Sixfields against Port Vale thanks to Benny Ashley Seals goal but an overall team effort. The Shoe Army then took a massive following to the old Rico Area to watch the Cobblers beat Coventry 2-1 in the Carabao Cup thanks to two goals from Etete. The first Leauge away game of the season saw the Cobblers beat Colchester United 1-0 thanks to Guthries scramble in the box. A home game v Rochdale could see the Cobblers equal the start in the 1990-91 season.

This season does see however see us match the run we had in our title-winning season under Chris Wilder when we began on the road against Bristol Rovers by John-Joe O’Toole’s goal just after halftime. The second game of the season saw the Cobblers beat Blackpool 3-0 in the Capital One Cup thanks to goals from Chris Hackett, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Sam Hoskins. Our first Leauge home game of this season saw the Cobblers beat Exeter 3-0. With the Goals coming from Jason Taylor, Ryan Cresswell and Marc Richards. Our run this season matches that so far but let’s hope it doesn’t continue as the next game was 2-0 defeat on the road at Barnett.

Could we have our best start in 30 years and match our run in the 1990-1991 season? An Away game at Edgar Street v Hereford United saw Pat Scully, Darren Wood, Stuart Beavon, and Kevin Wilkin all made their Cobbler’s debuts. Kevin Wilkin opened his goal-scoring account for the club with a scissor kick from six yards out and the Cobblers had the lead until 49 minutes when R. Jones ran from his own half of the field with the Cobblers defence back peddling. 10 minutes before time the Cobblers put the game to bed as Barnes netted the winner picking up the loose ball after Beavon miss-hit his shot.

Wednesday 29th August saw the Cobblers in Rumbelows Cup Round 1 action at Goldstone Ground, the game had a few changes Williams replaces Scully who is cup-tied. The game also saw Greg Campbell made his Cobblers debut. Two goals came for the Cobblers the first as Barnes pinpoint cross-found Wilkin who headed home at the far post. Just before time, the Cobblers put the tie to bed as Brown threaded the ball through to Wilkin who rounded Perry Digweed the Albion keeper. The Second tie was a 1-1 draw which saw the Cobblers go through 3-1 on aggregate.

Another win for the Cobblers came on the road at Watling Street V Maidstone, Which saw the Cobblers score another 3 goals, which made it the first time the Cobbler’s won their opening two League games since 1970.

The final win of our Run saw the Cobblers beat Blackpool 1-0 in front of 4,300 at the County Ground. Which also so the return of Ex-Cobbler Graham Carr as Blackpool manager. The only goal of the came as Barnes latched on to a loose ball and instinctively found his way to goal.

Let’s hope the Cobblers can make history and make some more starts for the season.
