Cobblers Past

History Never Forgotten

  • Founded: 1866
  • Nickname: The Pilgrims
  • Honours: Second Division Champions (tier 3) 1929–30, 1951–52, 1958–59, 2003–04

The club was founded in 1886 as Argyle Football Club, the first match taking place on 16 October 1886.

he club was disbanded 1894, before being resurrected in 1897 as one part of a general sports club, the Argyle Athletic Club. The club joined the Southern League in 1903 becoming professional in the process. Argyle won the Southern League in 1912–13, then in 1920–21 entered the Football League Third Division as a founder member, along with most of the Southern League, where they finished 11th in their first season.

On 14 August 2018, it was announced that shareholder Simon Hallett had purchased part of James Brent’s stake in the club, and had become the new majority shareholder and owner, and that former director, David Felwick, would return to the club as chairman when Brent stepped down on 31 October 2018. However, on 10 October 2018, it was reported that David Felwick was unable to take over as chairman, citing personal reasons, so on 1 November 2018, Hallett became both majority owner and chair of Plymouth Argyle.

Storylines – Plymouth

We look at some storylines leading up to this afternoons game.

Swindon 2 Northampton 1 – League One

The Cobblers took the lead in the 26th minute when Ryan Watson’s drilled right-foot shot proved too hot to handle for Swindon goalkeeper Archie Matthews.

The hosts hit back against the run of play on the stroke of half-time when Jonathan Mitchell failed to keep out Twine’s 25-yard free-kick.

Mickel Miller’s volley 13 minutes into the second half forced a good save from the overworked Matthews as Northampton continued to be the dominant force.

But the visitors were hit with another sucker punch when Pitman put Swindon in front with 20 minutes remaining.

Matty Palmer fed Jordan Garrick down the right and his pinpoint cross was nodded beyond Mitchell by the unmarked Pitman.

Twine came close to a third in the 85th minute when his powerful curling effort was parried away by Mitchell.

The defeat extended Northampton’s winless run to 10 matches and leaves the managerless Cobblers rock bottom of League One.

Plymouth 4 Lincoln 3 – League One

Argyle got off to a flying start against their second-placed opponenets, with defender Kell Watts turning in Conor Grant’s cross from the right after just three minutes.

Playmaker Danny Mayor doubled the home side’s lead 10 minutes later, latching on to a Tyrese Fornah pass before making space for himself and unleashing a low shot past former Argyle loan goalkeeper Alex Palmer from the edge of the area.

City hauled themselves back into the match when Conor McGrandles scored a similarly well-taken goal, making space for himself on the right side of the area before unleashing a low drive into the corner past keeper Michael Cooper.

And the game turned on its head in four second-half minutes as Jorge Grant converted twice from the penalty spot.

He levelled after Watts fouled Brennan Johnson in the 59th minute and then made it 3-2 after being felled himself by Mayor.

Plymouth’s Conor Grant made it 3-3 in the 77th minute with a measured strike to beat Palmer from just inside the area before Edwards struck the decisive blow at the death.

17/10/20 – Plymouth 2 The Cobblers 1

Watts volleyed in George Cooper’s corner from the right at the far post to clinch victory.

Powerhouse striker Frank Nouble opened the scoring for Plymouth, powering home a header at the far post after Connor Grant’s superb cross from the right.

Northampton levelled on 62 minutes when Sam Hoskins put Ricky Korboa in down the left and he fired past Michael Cooper.

Town number one Steve Arnold made a brilliant save in the top corner, flapping over George Cooper’s goal-bound 25-yard strike.

Home keeper Cooper made a brilliant save to turn over Michael Harriman’s thumping 10-yard strike after being teed up by Korboa.

Korboa levelled after 62 minutes and Harriman went close in Town’s next attack.

Stung by the goal, Argyle responded with Nouble sending a glancing near-post header just over from a corner.

Player of the match Cooper went close from the edge of the box and then sent a pacey cross for Nouble to head just over the angle as the greens went in search of a winner before Watts struck.

👞Looking Back 1987/88 – Part 3

Martin Singleton joined the club from West Bromwich Albion, and the £57,500 transfer topped the club record of £55,000 paid for Culpin. Singleton made his debut at Fulham in a 0-0 draw also notable for Keith McPherson becoming the fifth member of the Cobblers ‘ton up’ brigade.
