The origin of Mansfield Town can be traced back to 1897, where the club was formed by Frederick Abraham and Thomas Cripwell and called Mansfield Wesleyans.

That team entered the Mansfield & District Amateur League in 1902, before changing its name to Mansfield Wesley and joining the Notts & District League in 1906. The club finally became Mansfield Town in 1910 and moved from the Notts & Derbyshire League to the Central Alliance the following year.

Town fluctuated between the Fourth, Third and Second Divisions for more than 70 years before losing their Football League status in 2008. Between those years there was some success as they won the Fourth Division title in 1974/75 and the Third Division title in 1976–77, as well as the Football League Trophy in 1986/87 under Ian Greaves.

Hartlepool 2 Northampton 1- Leauge Two

Luke Molyneux struck a sweet late winner to extend Hartlepool’s impressive unbeaten home record with a comeback victory over Northampton.

Less than two minutes after Sam Hoskins’ second of the season put the Cobblers ahead in the 51st minute, Pools full-back David Ferguson headed the hosts level.

And, with six minutes remaining, Molyneux applied the cushioned-volleyed finish to grab his third of the season and a fifth win from six games at Victoria Park.

Northampton, who have won only one of their past six league matches, had the better of the first-half chances but Hartlepool goalkeeper Ben Killip made saves from Hoskins and Aaron McGowan.

Cobblers shotstopper Liam Roberts also had to be alert to deny Will Goodwin in the first half.

And it was Hoskins who fired Northampton ahead as he found the bottom corner when he met Jon Guthrie’s flick on with a sweet first touch.

But Jamie Sterry’s cross was headed in by Ferguson at the other end soon after and, after Molyneux was denied by a strong save from Roberts, there was no stopping the forward’s next effort from Joe Grey’s perfect cross.

That ended a run of four league matches without a win for Hartlepool who climbed to eighth as Northampton dropped to 14th.

Oldham 0 Mansfield 0 – Leauge Two

A miserable afternoon for Mansfield saw them held to a goalless draw at home to fellow League Two strugglers Oldham and lose midfielder George Maris to a serious head injury.

The Stags, who have now gone 11 games without a win in all competitions – and were without eight key players – began the first half well and Danny Johnson fired just wide after 11 minutes.

But they were rocked a minute later when Maris suffered a clash of heads with team-mate James Clarke and a worrying 13-minute hold-up followed before he was carried off on a stretcher.

Oldham eventually took a grip and five minutes before the break, Harrison McGahey turned the ball against the woodwork from six yards after Carl Piergianni had headed a Jamie Bowden corner towards him.

Rhys Oates sent a good chance wide for Mansfield after turning his marker.

But in the 14 first-half added minutes, home goalkeeper Nathan Bishop parried a shot from Piergianni after the Stags failed to clear Benny Couto’s long throw.

Then, on a breakaway, Zak Dearnley forced another save with David Keillor-Dunn sending the follow-up wide.

In a scrappy second half of few chances, Harry Charsley forced Jayson Leutwiler to save low efforts after 68 and 81 minutes as the home side dominated without reward.

Northampton 1 Mansfield 2 7th March 2020

Northampton’s play-off hopes suffered a setback when they were beaten 2-1 by struggling Mansfield in a bad-tempered clash at Sixfields.

Forward Sam Hoskins was sent off for Cobblers after just 11 minutes and Danny Rose scored the subsequent penalty kick before Willem Tomlinson’s second-half strike sealed Mansfield’s first away win in over two months.

Northampton made the better start and Nicky Adams went close with a well-struck free-kick, acrobatically tipped over by Stags goalkeeper Aidan Stone.

But it all unravelled for the home side after 11 minutes when Hoskins saw red for pushing Harry Charsley as the last defender and Rose made no mistake from the spot.

Tempers flared on several occasions in a heated first half but Northampton coped well with their numerical disadvantage and Vadaine Oliver came close to levelling with a spectacular overhead-kick.

Steve Arnold produced a fine double save from Rose and Charsley before Tomlinson clipped the crossbar early in the second half.

Northampton were still in the game and Stone pulled off two excellent stops to deny Lloyd Jones and Scott Wharton, but it was game over with 16 minutes to go when Mansfield broke clear and Nicky Maynard slipped in Tomlinson, who calmly beat Arnold.

Northampton did manage a late consolation when Harry Smith headed in Adams’ cross in stoppage time.
