Cobblers Past

History Never Forgotten

  • Year Founded: 1904
  • Nickname: The Tigers
  • Major Honours: FA Cup: Runners-up: 2014 Third Division: Champions: 1965/66

Hull City was founded in 1904, playing friendly games at The Boulevard (the home of the Hull Rugby League Club), Anlaby Road Cricket Ground and Dairycoates. A year later, they were elected to the Second Division of the Football League.

Bruce made himself an instant hero as he guided the Tigers back into the Premier League in his first season in charge with promotion sealed after a 2-2 draw with Cardiff City at the KC Stadium on a dramatic final day of the 2012/13 season.

The improvement in results was steady rather than spectacular, but Championship status was eventually secured as Adkins’ men finished the campaign eight points clear of the bottom three, Jarrod Bowen leading the way with 15 goals in his first full season of senior action at the club.

Northampton 1 Shrewsbury 0 – League One

Victory, coupled with defeats for all of their relegation rivals, saw the Cobblers move up to 19th in the table and three points clear of the drop zone.

After a cagey opening of few chances, Northampton took the lead after 27 minutes when Watson ran on to Peter Kioso’s low cross from the right and side-footed into the top corner from 16 yards out.

The smart finish was the Northampton top-scorer’s eighth goal of the campaign in all competitions and seventh in his last 11 league games.

Sam Hoskins also went close for the hosts, while Shrewsbury’s only chance fell to Harry Chapman but he headed over from eight yards.

The second half saw both teams struggle to keep hold of the ball in a scrappy contest, in which the Cobblers did enough to hold on for an important victory.

Crewe 1 Hull 2 – League One

Grant McCann’s side fell behind after 66 minutes when Chris Porter drove home a penalty.

But referee Chris Pollard awarded a second spot-kick five minutes later which Josh Magennis converted to draw the Tigers level before Wilks pounced in dramatic fashion.

The Tigers struggled to lay a glove on Crewe before the break, with a Tom Eaves header easily dealt with by Will Jaaskelainen.

Keane Lewis-Potter’s shot from the byline then looked to be creeping in before a last-ditch clearance from Alex defender Olly Lancashire diverted the ball past the post.

The sides traded penalties midway through the second period, first when Regan Slater lifted his hand at a cross from Charlie Kirk and veteran Porter stepped up to drive his penalty down the middle.

Hull responded and George Honeyman’s rising drive was tipped over by Jaasakelainen before Callum Ainley’s trip on Callum Elder was punished by substitute Magennis from 12 yards.

The visitors pressed hard for a winner but were denied by Jaaskelainen, who kept out Dan Crowley’s close-range effort.

Donervon Daniels’ deflected effort nearly snatched it for Crewe but Hull nicked a winner when Wilks’ drive from the right flew in off the far post.

26 September 2020 – The Cobblers 2 Hull 2

The visitors never hit top gear in a low-quality contest but first-half goals from Keane Lewis-Potter and George Honeyman were more than sufficient in making it three wins from three.

Sam Hoskins had an early shot blocked and Joseph Mills saw his free-kick beaten away by Matt Ingram, while Lewis-Potter whistled an effort just wide for the visitors.

Hull had been second best for the first 34 minutes but they then struck against the run of play when Honeyman’s free-kick was headed home by an unmarked Lewis-Potter.

And the visitors made it 2-0 a minute before half-time as debutant Hakeeb Adelakun slipped through Honeyman and he slotted the ball past goalkeeper Steve Arnold.

Greg Docherty had a chance to kill the game in first-half stoppage-time as he slashed an effort wide, but Hull rarely looked in trouble in a very scrappy second half.

Adelakun and James Scott had the best chances to add a third goal after the break but Arnold foiled both.

Here’s a look at a selection of players that have played for both the Cobblers and Hull.

The Sheffield-based official continues his third campaign as an EFL referee on Tuesday evening following a serious ACL injury in pre-season which has up until now thwarted his progession as an official.
