History Never Forgotten

PREVIEW – Forest Green Rovers

Forest Green Rovers Football Club is a professional football club based in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, England. The team competes in League Two, the fourth tier of English football, and have played their home games at The New Lawn since 2006 when they moved from their original home at The Lawn Ground.

Formed in October 1889, the club became founder members of the Mid Gloucestershire League five years later. Competing in various local league competitions for much of the 20th century, they won a multitude of league titles: the Dursley & District League (1902–03), the Stroud & District League (1911–12 and 1920–21), the Stroud Premier League (1934–35, 1935–36 and 1936–37), the North Gloucestershire League (1920–21 and 1921–22), and the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League (1937–38, 1949–50 and 1950–51). They became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League in 1968 before they were moved up to the Premier Division of the Hellenic League seven years later.

Forest Green won the Hellenic League in the 1981–82 season and lifted the FA Vase after beating Rainworth Miners Welfare in the final at Wembley. They spent the next 13 years in the Midland Division of the Southern League, and briefly competed under the name Stroud F.C. Reverting to the name Forest Green Rovers, the club won successive Southern League Southern Division and Premier Division titles in 1996–97 and 1997–98, winning promotion into the Conference. Reaching the 1999 FA Trophy Final, which they lost, they became the first club to reach the finals of both the FA Vase and FA Trophy. They also reached the 2001 FA Trophy Final, which again they lost. Twice reprieved from relegation from the Conference National due to the demotion of other clubs, the club was transformed following investment from green energy industrialist Dale Vince in 2010.

Under Dale Vince’s chairmanship, Forest Green became the world’s first vegan football club in 2015, and the New Lawn was installed with numerous eco-friendly innovations.[2] Investment in the playing squad saw the club compete for promotion into the English Football League, which they achieved with victory in the 2017 National League play-offs, having been beaten in the semi-finals in 2015 and 2016 final.

Northampton 1 – Leauge Trophy

Northampton returned to winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 victory over 10-man Scunthorpe.

The Cobblers dominated after Emmanuel Onariase’s early red card but had to wait until the second half to make it count with Danny Rose and Sam Hoskins the men on target.

Onariase saw red after just 20 minutes when he barged over Rose as the striker bore down on goal.

Mitch Pinnock’s subsequent free-kick slammed into the wall before United almost struck against the run of play as Liam Roberts saved from Devarn Green and George Taft’s header deflected a fraction wide.

But Northampton dominated and Paul Lewis went close with a header while Rory Watson brilliantly kept out Hoskins at point-blank range in first half stoppage-time.

Lewis had further chances in the second half, including a header against the crossbar, and Northampton finally made the breakthrough when Rose stabbed home Hoskins’ cross on 63 minutes.

Scunthorpe applied some late pressure but the home side made sure of all three points in stoppage-time when Hoskins forced the ball home after Dylan Connolly’s shot was cleared off the line.

Exeter City 0 Forest Green Rovers 0 – Leauge Two

Forest Green should have been ahead inside the opening eight minutes as first Kane Wilson brought a fine save out of Cameron Dawson before a stretching Jamille Matt put the ball wide in front of an open goal Dan Sweeney had headed back a cross.

Both sides looked to play expansive attacking football, with Exeter’s wide players Jake Caprice and Josh Key looking dangerous before Matt glanced a header over the Exeter bar from a Cadden cross eight minutes before the break.

Regan Hendry’s long-range left-footed effort grazed the foot of the Exeter post in the 44th minute, while Sam Nombe almost put City ahead after breaking from the resulting goal kick, but Rovers goalkeeper Luke McGee bravely saved at the strikers’ feet as an entertaining first half ended goalless.

The home fans almost celebrated an opener after an hour when Nombe broke through after Matt Jay’s flicked pass, but the striker’s low effort curled just past the far post, while at the other end Matt beat the offside trap but had a low effort blocked by Dawson two minutes later.

Rovers fans thought they were celebrating a winner with 15 minutes left when Baily Cargill pounced on a Pierce Sweeney mistake, but the defender volleyed wide of the far post.

Harrogate Town leapfrog Forest Green at the top of the table on goal difference after a 3-1 win at Mansfield Town, while Exeter slip to 13th place after six games.

Northampton Town came away with a bonus point through a penalty shootout victory after a 1-1 draw in the Papa John’s Trophy on the 31st August.

Rovers opened the scoring in the fixture, a shot by Josh March took a deflection off Northampton’s Michael Harriman before hitting the net.

Northampton hit back in the second half through Scott Pollock, as he directed a header into the far corner of the net.

The Cobblers then went on to secure a bonus point after winning the penalty shootout 4-2.

The last time the two teams met in the league was back in December 2019, with Northampton taking the three points that day to extend their six game home winning streak at the time.

The only goal of the game through a first half own goal by Matt Mills, despite FGR hitting the woodwork three times throughout the match.
