PREVIEW – Blackpool (A)

Match called off because of a waterlogged pitch

  • Year Founded: 1887
  • Nickname: The Tangerines
  • Major Honours: Division Two Winners: 1929-30 FA Cup Winners: 1953 Anglo-Italian CupWinners: 1971

What started as a church club was known as Victoria FC in 1877 led to the rise of one of the most authentic, original and historic football clubs in the world. This was also the year when the name was changed under the chairmanship of Mr Samuel Bancroft that gave the name himself. The first-time people saw the iconic tangerine-black striped football kits was in 1923 when Blackpool drew against Oldham Athletic in the opening game of the new season.

Even though the shade of tangerine was not what the club was looking for in their first seasons, it soon wore off as a tradition that the brand had at the time. There have been many new shades of tangerine, but the colour has always been kept in combination with black – which is one more fact that speaks a lot about the tradition of Blackpool FC.

Some of the most notable achievements of the club include winning the 1953 FA Cup Final against Bolton Wanderers (4-3) and making three FA Cup Final appearances in six years during the 1950s. The best position that the club had, on the other hand, was a runner-up to Manchester United in the Football League First Division in the 1955-56 season.

Northampton 0 MK Dons 2 – League Trophy

Ryan Watson fired over after a tentative opening few minutes. MK Dons briefly thought they had taken the lead when Joe Mason put the ball in the back of the net on 16 minutes but the off-side flag was already up.

Mitchell saved from Scott Fraser but the Dons were growing into the contest and the breakthrough came before the half hour mark, on-loan Middlesbrough striker Stephen Walker with a neat chip over Mitchell having been played in by Fraser.

Danny Rose headed wide from a Sam Hoskins cross as the Cobblers responded while it needed a smart save from Mitchell to prevent Mason doubling the visitors lead before the break.

Keith Curle made a change at half-time with Ricky Korboa replacing Rose and the substitute had a chance to equalise when his initial shot was blocked, Lee Nicholls making the save on the follow-up.

Harry Smith came on for Benny Ashley-Seal with Cameron Jerome and Ben Gladwin on in a double change for the Dons. Jerome was presented with an opportunity to shoot after a miscommunication at the back but Mitchell made a good save with his legs.

Cian Bolger headed straight at Nicholls from a Mills corner before the latter made way for Caleb Chukwuemeka.

The Dons doubled their lead from the penalty spot, Stephen Walker scoring his second goal of the night after Jerome was brought down by Bolger. Watson had a shot saved by Nicholls in injury time, the Dons having done enough to book their place in the next round.

Hull 1 Blackpool 1 – League One

Yates battered the ball home from an unmissable position when Gary Madine’s deflected hit across the face of goal caused defensive confusion after 81 minutes.

Hull had taken the lead after 51 minutes when Mallik Wilks found the bottom-right corner with a fierce left-footed drive.

But once Reece Burke was sent off after 77 minutes for dragging down Ben Woodburn on the edge of the penalty box – the Hull centre-back having initially slipped – Blackpool seized the momentum and deservedly equalised.

Little separated the two sides in a well-contested first half which lacked attacking quality.

Hull, for instance, should have at least tested goalkeeper Chris Maxwell when Wilks dragged wide from a promising position.

City defender Jacob Greaves will also regret heading Greg Docherty’s free-kick over the crossbar just before the break.

Blackpool were not without a threat going forward, though, and came close when Sullay Kaikai’s deflected hit went just wide.

Neil Critchley’s men pressed gamely following Yates’ goal, but they could find no way through.

Hull City are one point ahead of Portsmouth, who have a game in hand, while Blackpool drop a place to 14th.

Tuesday 12th November 2015 – Northampton 3 Blackpool 0

Three goals in nine minutes earned Northampton Town a comfortable 3-0 victory over Blackpool in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

New-look Blackpool began brightly with Jack Redshaw at the heart of their best moves but Northampton created the early chances. Sam Hoskins shot against the near post and Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed just over.

Chris Hackett swept Cobblers into a 20th minute lead when he converted David Buchanan’s low cross from just inside the box.

Calvert-Lewin doubled Northampton’s advantage four minutes later when Blackpool failed to deal with Hackett’s low cross and the on-loan Sheffield United striker turned well to beat Kyle Letheren from 10 yards.

Hoskins increased Northampton’s lead in the 29th minute when Blackpool failed to deal with Lawson D’Ath’s low cross and he beat Letheren at the second attempt after his initial effort had been blocked.

Redshaw should have reduced the arrears when he mis-kicked from close range with the goal begging and Kwame Thomas was unable to force the ball home.

Joel Byrom and Ryan Cresswell went close after the restart and Calvert-Lewin almost doubled his tally. Thomas missed Blackpool’s best chance but they offered little in the final third.
