Cobblers Past

History Never Forgotten

  • Year Founded: 1887
  • Nickname: The Tangerines
  • Major Honours: Division Two Winners: 1929-30 FA Cup Winners: 1953 Anglo-Italian CupWinners: 1971

What started as a church club was known as Victoria FC in 1877 led to the rise of one of the most authentic, original and historic football clubs in the world. This was also the year when the name was changed under the chairmanship of Mr Samuel Bancroft that gave the name himself. The first-time people saw the iconic tangerine-black striped football kits was in 1923 when Blackpool drew against Oldham Athletic in the opening game of the new season.

Even though the shade of tangerine was not what the club was looking for in their first seasons, it soon wore off as a tradition that the brand had at the time. There have been many new shades of tangerine, but the colour has always been kept in combination with black – which is one more fact that speaks a lot about the tradition of Blackpool FC.

Some of the most notable achievements of the club include winning the 1953 FA Cup Final against Bolton Wanderers (4-3) and making three FA Cup Final appearances in six years during the 1950s. The best position that the club had, on the other hand, was a runner-up to Manchester United in the Football League First Division in the 1955-56 season.

Northampton 0 MK Dons 2 – League Trophy

A goalless draw for Northampton at Fleetwood lifted Keith Curle’s side out of the relegation zone. The hosts continue to stutter and have not won since Joey Barton left Highbury five games ago.

Northampton threatened early on when Sam Hoskins lifted a shot narrowly over the top from the edge of the box. Fleetwood replied with Harvey Saunders seeing a powerful effort deflected narrowly off target.

Home keeper Alex Cairns got the better of Ryan Edmondson in a one-on-one situation just past the half-hour mark. As half-time approached Fleetwood midfielder Sam Finley curled a 25-yard effort just past the upright.

After the restart, Northampton striker Danny Rose met a cross from debutant Peter Kioso, only to head just wide. Fleetwood replied with Paddy Madden firing a shot on the turn narrowly over.

Northampton substitute Ryan Watson twice went close to nicking victory late on. He curled a shot into the side-netting, before then drilling in a shot which Cairns saved well, diving at full length.

Hull 1 Blackpool 1 – League One

Blackpool towered above their Sky Bet League One neighbours Wigan with a five-star show at the DW Stadium.

After a dour first half on a difficult playing surface, the Seasiders stamped their mark on the game with two goals in the space of two minutes just before the interval.

Blackpool then ran riot in the second half as they recorded a 5-0 victory.

First, Marvin Ekpiteta fired home from close range after Wigan goalkeeper Jamie Jones could only palm away the first effort.

Then, with three minutes of the half remaining, a Wigan defender appeared to help the ball into the path of Jerry Yates, who had a simple task to fire home past Jones. Blackpool added a third goal after 53 minutes, and this time it was a decent move that opened up the home defence, allowing Matty Virtue to fire home from 15 yards.

Blackpool almost added a fourth in the final quarter, but Jones stood up well to deny Ellis Simms. But the on-loan Everton striker was not to be denied, and scored his first goal for the club with three minutes to go from all of a yard. And he added number five in stoppage time with another finish from close range that was far, far too easy.

Tuesday 12th November 2015 – Northampton 3 Blackpool 0

Three goals in nine minutes earned Northampton Town a comfortable 3-0 victory over Blackpool in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

New-look Blackpool began brightly with Jack Redshaw at the heart of their best moves but Northampton created the early chances. Sam Hoskins shot against the near post and Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed just over.

Chris Hackett swept Cobblers into a 20th minute lead when he converted David Buchanan’s low cross from just inside the box.

Calvert-Lewin doubled Northampton’s advantage four minutes later when Blackpool failed to deal with Hackett’s low cross and the on-loan Sheffield United striker turned well to beat Kyle Letheren from 10 yards.

Hoskins increased Northampton’s lead in the 29th minute when Blackpool failed to deal with Lawson D’Ath’s low cross and he beat Letheren at the second attempt after his initial effort had been blocked.

Redshaw should have reduced the arrears when he mis-kicked from close range with the goal begging and Kwame Thomas was unable to force the ball home.

Joel Byrom and Ryan Cresswell went close after the restart and Calvert-Lewin almost doubled his tally. Thomas missed Blackpool’s best chance but they offered little in the final third.
