History Never Forgotten

  • Sutton United FC was formed on 5 March 1898 when a meeting of two leading local clubs, Sutton Association and Sutton Guild Rovers, decided that they should join forces. The amber and chocolate colours of Sutton Association were retained, along with both clubs’ grounds, and the United club’s first game was against Norwood & Selhurst FC . With two grounds available Sutton fielded three teams in the Herald and Surrey Junior Leagues, but the loss of Western Road after a year led to the disbanding of the third team. The senior side’s first honour came in the form of the Herald Junior Cup in 1902, the first of three successive triumphs in that competition.
  • In 1910 Sutton assumed senior status and joined the Southern Suburban League, and it was during the next decade that the club gained use of their present home in Gander Green Lane. After finishing as Southern Suburban League runners-up in 1920 they were elected to the Athenian League at the end of the following season, and celebrated by twice winning the Surrey Senior Shield. League form was more uncertain, and in 1926 U’s had to seek re-election, but were successful and recovered to win the championship just two years later. Over the next decade Sutton established themselves as a force in the amateur game, twice reaching the FA Amateur Cup semi-finals, although on the first occasion they were expelled from the competition after fielding two players who had played Sunday football and were therefore ineligible.
  • Inevitably fortunes swung to and fro but after Barnet fought back from 2-0 down to gain a draw at Torquay on the penultimate Saturday of the season, the U’s knew that a win the next day at home to Hartlepool United would clinch the title. In front of the BT Sport cameras and with just over a thousand fans allowed back into the stadium the team rose to the occasion, claiming the National League title and promotion to the Football League for the first time.

Mitch Pinnock scored with virtually the last kick of the game to rescue a dramatic point for Northampton against runaway League Two leaders Forest Green.

Matt Stevens’ header was controversially deemed to have crossed the line 20 minutes from time before Pinnock emphatically slammed in an equaliser deep into stoppage-time.

Northampton made the better start and they were inches away from a fourth-minute lead when Pinnock’s superb curling shot clipped the inside of the post and bounced away.

Paul Lewis glanced a header wide while Forest Green’s best chance of the first half fell to Jamille Matt – but he was excellently denied by Liam Roberts.

Rovers were on the front foot after half-time and they were so close to breaking the deadlock when Matt’s header hit the base of the post.

The goal that did eventually give the visitors the lead came with a huge slice of controversy with Stevens deeming to have smuggled Nicky Cadden’s corner over the line despite Northampton’s furious protests.

That looked to be the goal that made all the difference until the fifth minute of added time when Pinnock dramatically fired a sweet shot into the bottom corner for a share of the spoils.

Will Randall struck a stoppage-time winner to secure promotion-chasing Sutton a 3-2 win over struggling Colchester.

Colchester took a third-minute lead when debutant Owura Edwards’ 25-yard strike beat keeper Dean Bouzanis, after Brendan Wiredu had won possession well in midfield.

But Sutton equalised in the ninth minute through Isaac Olaofe, who followed up to score after Omar Bugiel’s close-range effort had rattled a post.

Colchester goalkeeper Jake Turner pushed away Bugiel’s effort soon after but the visitors restored their lead, in first-half stoppage time.

Freddie Sears slotted home from the spot after Louis John was adjudged to have handled in the area.

And the hosts equalised in the 64th minute through Olaofe, who headed home at the far post after substitute Richie Bennett had nodded Enzio Boldewijn’s delivery across the face of goal.

Randall hit Sutton’s winner in the second minute of stoppage time when he drilled home a low shot from the edge of the area from Alistair Smith’s assist.

Sutton United impressively claimed their first-ever away win in the EFL at Northampton in League Two.

Joe Kizzi and Donovan Wilson scored either side of half-time as Matt Gray’s team continued their superb form with a fourth win in five league games.

Wilson’s powerful drive forced a decent early save from Liam Roberts before the same man headed wide later in the half.

Roberts also had to be at full stretch to keep out Richie Bennett’s header, while Danny Rose fired the ball wide in Northampton’s only chance of the first half.

Sutton were by far the better side in the opening 45 minutes and claimed a deserved lead just before half-time when Enzio Boldewijn’s corner was glanced into the net by Kizzi.

And the visitors were in dreamland just 25 seconds into the second half as Wilson emphatically beat Roberts after being slipped through by Bennett.

Sutton remained dominant and could have won by a bigger margin with Alistair Smith and Wilson both close to scoring.
