Cobblers Past

History Never Forgotten

  • Founded: 1878
  • Nickname: The Tractor men
  • Honours: Division One Winners 1961/62 FA Cup Winners 1977-78 UEFA Cup winners 1980-81

Ipswich Town were formed as an amateur club in 1878, but it was not until 1936 when they turned professional. After winning the Southern League at the first attempt and finishing third the following season, they were elected to the Football League on May 30th, 1938.

They started in the Third Division (South) and their first success came in the 1953-54 season when they won the title. Town found life in the Second Division tough and a year later they were down again.

On the 30th of May 2018, Town appointed Paul Hurst as the Club’s new manager on a three-year deal. Paul was joined by his assistant, Chris Doig.

However, the Blues parted company with Hurst at the end of October with the Club at the bottom of the league. Paul Lambert was appointed his successor, with the Scot signing a two-and-a-half year deal at Portman Road, keeping him at the Club until 2021.

In April 2019, following a 1-1 draw with Birmingham City, the Blues were relegated to League One.

Storylines – Ipswich

As we build-up to Tuesdays game v Ipswich at Portman Road, we look at some storylines leading up to the game…

Northampton 0 Burton 1- League One

Hasselbaink spent a large part of the 2017-18 season as Cobblers boss before he was sacked in the April, but saw his Brewers side pick up their third win from four games thanks to Michael Bostwick’s late free-kick and a stoppage-time strike by Ryan Edwards.

Although they remain in the bottom four, they are just two points behind Northampton just above them, as well as Bristol Rovers in 20th in a congested bottom-half of the table.

Jon Brady took caretaker charge of Northampton for the first time since Keith Curle was sacked and he nearly had the dream start but Lloyd Jones was deemed marginally offside after heading home.

Ryan Watson then cracked the crossbar with a fine strike from the edge of the box before Sam Hoskins volleyed narrowly over as Northampton continued to press.

Burton improved and Josh Parker’s cheeky free-kick caught the outside of a woodwork before Lucas Akins dragged wide of the far post.

Danny Rose forced Ben Garratt into a decent save early in the second half but visiting goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell unwisely picked up a back pass in the 77th minute and Bostwick drilled home from Sean Clare’s lay-off.

Burton then sealed the three point in stoppage-time, with Edwards racing away from the Northampton defence before slotting in.

Burton 1 Hull 0- League One

James Norwood provided an early breakthrough for Town when firing a sixth-minute half-volley past Posh goalkeeper Christy Pym at his near post.

Despite going a goal up, Ipswich were fortunate not to find themselves a man down after 15 minutes when Flynn Downes escaped with a yellow card for an ugly lunge on Dan Butler.

The Posh man avoided injury and played a pivotal role in their leveller six minutes before the break when his delivery from the left was headed home by Jonson Clarke-Harris – his 15th league goal of the season.

The turnaround was completed in spectacular style in the 50th minute courtesy of a 25-yard free-kick from Joe Ward which flew in, with giant Town keeper Tomas Holy rooted to the spot.

Holy twice denied Sammie Szmodics further goals, while the same player saw a penalty appeal ignored after another attempt appeared to be handled by Stephen Ward.

Pym then denied Ipswich a dramatic leveller with a late double save to keep out Troy Parrott and substitute Josh Harrop.
