Cobblers Past

History Never Forgotten

PREVIEW – Fleetwood (A)

  • Founded: Originally 1908 Fleetwood Town 1977
  • Nickname: The Fishermen
  • Honours: Conference National Champions – 2011–12 Football League Two Play-off winners – 2013–14

The club became founder members of the newly created Northern Premier League in 1968, though folded in 1976 and reformed the following year as Fleetwood Town. They initially competed in the Cheshire County League and then joined the North West Counties League in 1982. They were promoted as First Division champions in 1983–84 and reached the final of the FA Vase in the 1984-85 season. However, this incarnation of the club also folded in 1997.

The current incarnation of the club came into existence as Fleetwood Wanderers in 1997 and won the North West Counties League First Division title in 1998–99. They changed their name to Fleetwood Town in 2002 and were taken over by Andrew Pilley two years later, who would transform the club’s fortunes with significant financial investments.

23/01/21 – Lincoln City 2 Northampton 1 – League One

An inspired substitution from boss Michael Appleton helped Lincoln secure a 2-1 win over Northampton at the LNER Stadium.

Appleton sent on midfielder Conor McGrandles midway through the second half and he bagged the opener seven minutes later to ensure the Imps kept pace with Hull at the top of League One.

Anthony Scully, meanwhile, made sure of the three points late on before Danny Rose’s stunning consolation for the Cobblers.

The visitors had the best of a goalless first half, although it was the Imps who went closest to breaking the deadlock nine minutes before the interval through defender Joe Walsh, who saw his effort cleared off the line.

After the break a deep swirling free-kick from Northampton’s Joseph Mills tested Alex Palmer, before Jorge Grant and Tayo Edun combined down Lincoln’s left to tee McGrandles up for the opener.

Sam Hoskins saw his penalty appeal waved away as Keith Curle’s men chased an equaliser, but Scully emphatically rounded off the win by blasting home Tom Hopper’s unselfish pass.

Rose reduced the arears though with a spectacular overhead kick from outside the area with what proved to be the last kick of the game.

23/01/21 -Wigan Athletic 0 Fleetwood Town 0 – League One

Wigan and Fleetwood cancelled themselves out in a League One encounter that failed to produce a real clear-cut opportunity let alone a goal.

Wigan started well and Tom Pearce managed to get in down the left, but he seemed to get caught between shooting and crossing, and in the end the ball flew past the far post.

Fleetwood threatened briefly, when Paddy Madden headed over and then fired straight at Wigan captain Jamie Jones in the home goal.

But the hosts gradually took control without ever looking like they were on the verge of scoring.

Chris Merrie led a two-on-one break but his through ball lacked the power to allow Zach Clough to run in on goal.

Dan Gardner then cut in from the left before shooting wide of the near post.

And then Clough wasted the best chance of the first half when, after Gardner’s cross found the former Nottingham Forest man, he pulled the ball wide of the upright.

There was still time before the interval for Callum Lang to force a fine save out of Alex Cairns, whose side would have been pleased to go in on level terms.

The second half was a far less eventful affair, with Cairns again denying Lang at the far post, and also able to repel Kyle Joseph with relative ease.

Saturday 01st December 2020 – Northampton 1 Fleetwood 0

Cian Bolger’s first goal for Northampton secured his side only a second home win of the season – a hard-fought 1-0 victory over in-form Fleetwood.

The visitors quickly asserted themselves as the dominant force at Sixfields, with Callum Camps and Sam Finley dragging wide of the target from the edge of the penalty box.

Ched Evans went closer still when shooting into the side-netting after getting behind the defence, before his free-kick was well-saved by Steve Arnold.

Northampton did not have a chance of note in the first half, but within three minutes of the restart they were ahead. Nicky Adams delivered a pinpoint corner and Bolger timed his run to perfection to head home.

Fleetwood struggled to repeat their first-half dominance after the break but it was all one-way traffic in the final 15 minutes and they so nearly levelled when Finley dragged just wide.

That was to be their only real chance, however, as Northampton defended stoutly and clung on.

A Look Back at our first meeting with Fleetwood Town.

Luke Guttridge struck the second-half winner as Northampton scraped through to the FA Cup second round after beating plucky Fleetwood at Sixfields.

Fleetwood created the better chances early on, but Guttridge got the opener when he turned in John Johnson’s cross.

Sean Clancy deservedly equalised in the 41st minute, drilling the ball home from a tight angle.

But Guttridge restored the hosts’ lead with a fine free-kick and Northampton held off Fleetwood’s late rally.

Northampton manager Ian Sampson told BBC Radio Northampton:

“The result was the most important thing and all credit to Fleetwood. We knew we were in for a difficult game. and they’re a decent outfit.

“I expect them to be challenging for promotion to the conference this year and they gave us a tough game.

“I thought we edged it after our first goal. They fought back but we edged it and I’m delighted we’re through.”
