Chris Doig: No Stranger to Northampton Town

Chris Doig has joined The Cobblers as assistant manager, returning to Sixfields more than 15 years after ending his playing career with the club.  

The former defender originally joined the Cobblers on loan from Nottingham Forest F.C. in 2003 before making the move permanent in 2005. Across two spells with the club, Doig made 129 league appearances and scored four goals.  

Doig was part of the Northampton side that won promotion from League Two during the 2005–06 season and later captained the club between 2006 and 2009.  

Playing Career

Born in Dumfries on 13 February 1981, Doig began his senior career with Queen of the South F.C. before moving to Nottingham Forest F.C. in 1997.  

His playing career included spells with:

  • Queen of the South F.C.
  • Nottingham Forest F.C.
  • Northampton Town F.C.
  • Central Coast Mariners F.C.
  • Pelita Jaya F.C.
  • Aldershot Town F.C.
  • York City F.C.
  • Grimsby Town F.C.

Career stats:

  • 300 senior appearances
  • 7 senior goals

At international level, Doig represented Scotland U18 and Scotland U21, earning 14 caps for the Under-21 side.  

Coaching Career

Doig moved into coaching during his final playing years at Grimsby Town F.C., becoming assistant manager in 2014 under Paul Hurst.  

His coaching roles have included:

  • Grimsby Town F.C. assistant manager
  • Shrewsbury Town F.C. assistant manager
  • Ipswich Town F.C. assistant manager
  • Scunthorpe United F.C. assistant manager

Doig followed Paul Hurst to both Shrewsbury Town and Ipswich Town, helping Shrewsbury reach the 2018 EFL Trophy Final and the League One play-off final.  

He later returned to Grimsby Town as assistant manager and helped the club secure promotion back to the Football League in 2022.
