As Northampton Town prepare for another League Cup campaign, it’s a good time to look back at the Cobblers’ last six Round One ties in the competition.

It’s been a mixed run for Town — with difficult draws, narrow defeats and a couple of standout victories against higher-level opposition. From memorable nights under the Sixfields lights to frustrating early exits, the League Cup has certainly provided its fair share of drama.

2025/26 – Southampton prove too strong

The Cobblers’ most recent League Cup outing saw Premier League side Southampton visit Sixfields in August 2025. It was a hard-fought contest, but the Saints edged through with a narrow 1-0 victory.

Northampton put in a disciplined display and stayed in the game throughout, but one decisive moment proved enough to send the visitors into Round Two.

2024/25 – Wycombe strike at Sixfields

A familiar opponent awaited Town in 2024 as Wycombe Wanderers made the trip to Sixfields.

It was another disappointing Round One exit for the Cobblers, with Wycombe running out 2-0 winners and continuing their recent strong record against Town in the competition.

2023/24 – Tough night at Swansea

Northampton travelled to South Wales in 2023 to take on Championship side Swansea City.

The Swans proved too strong on the night, recording a 3-0 victory and ending Town’s cup run at the first hurdle.

2022/23 – Another narrow defeat to Wycombe

For the second time in three seasons, Wycombe knocked Northampton out of the League Cup.

A competitive tie at Sixfields ended in a 2-1 defeat, with Town unable to find a late equaliser.

2021/22 – Cobblers stun Coventry

One of Northampton’s best recent League Cup results came in 2021 when they travelled to Championship side Coventry City.

Against the odds, the Cobblers produced an excellent 2-1 victory to book their place in Round Two. It remains one of the standout cup performances of recent years.

2020/21 – Cardiff swept aside

Before the Coventry win came another memorable Round One performance, as Northampton beat Cardiff City 3-0 at Sixfields.

It was a brilliant display from the Cobblers, who looked sharp and clinical to comfortably progress.

The Round One record

Across their last six League Cup Round One ties, Northampton Town have:

• Played: 6
• Won: 2
• Lost: 4
• Goals scored: 6
• Goals conceded: 9

While recent campaigns have often ended early, the victories over Cardiff and Coventry remain reminders of what the Cobblers can do in cup football.

As another campaign approaches, supporters will be hoping for another memorable cup night and perhaps a longer run this time around.
