Tommy Mulgrew joined Northampton at a time they had many good inside forwards. When he did get a chance in the first team he always gave a good account of himself but always lost out to experience.
Newcastle saw something in his play that they liked and paid Northampton £9,000 to take him to St. James Park.
Again Tommy struggled to hold down a regular firs team place and within less than two seasons he was on the move again this time to Southampton for a combined fee of £12,000 with Bill Foulkes. Tommy’s value was £7,000.
At The Dell Tommy entered the record books as both a villain and hero.
He netted within 15 seconds of his Southampton debut but a few seasons later he became the first ‘Saint’ to be sent off for 21 years!
After eight seasons, over 300 games and 99 goals Tommy moved to Aldershot. He was offered terms but was in dispute with Southampton over his contract and left.
At Aldershot he was made captain and gave the club three seasons before winding down his career with Andover.
He returned to Northampton managed Rothwell Town and worked for British Timken before his retirement.
Thomas sadly passed away on the 12th of January 2016 from Alzheimer’s.
