History Never Forgotten

Ahead of the Tuesday nights meeting between the Cobblers and Wigan. We look back at some of the players that have played for both the Cobblers and Wigan. How many do you remember?

Michael Jacobs

Michal joined the Cobblers in 2009 he spent 3 seasons with us making 87 appearances scoring 11 goals he joined Wigan in 2015 and spent 5 years there making over 170 appearances scoring 32 goals.

Neil David’s

Neil made history when he played for the Cobblers as he was the first loan player to be sent off at the County Ground. He played for the Cobblers in 1975 making 9 appearances. He joined Wigan in 1978 and spent 4 seasons there making 78 appearances and scoring 1 goal.

Steve Senior
Steve joined the Cobblers in May 1987 for a fee of £11,000 he only made 6 appearances. He got sent off v port vale in the cup and never won his place back. He joined Wigan in October 1987 spent 3 seasons there making 129 appearances scoring 3 goals.

Leon Barnett

Leon joined Wigan in 2013 whilst they were a Championship side he spent 3 seasons there making 96 appearances. He joined the Cobblers in 2017 and made 24 appearances then was made to retire early due to injury.

Billy Stewart
Billy played for Wigan in 1984 making 15 appearances before joining the Cobblers in 1994 where he made 31 appearances. When Ian Atkins arrived he fell out of favour as he signed Andy Woodman.

Gavin Johnson

Gavin signed for Wigan in 1995 for £15,000 he spent three seasons there making 92 appearances scoring 8 goals. He came on loan to the Cobblers in August 2005 spending only a season with us making 26 appearances scoring the 1 goal.

Magno Vieira

Brazilian footballer Magno came on loan from Wigan to the Cobblers in 2004 making 10 appearances scoring 2 goals. He became the only Brazilians play for the Cobblers first team and score. He never made a first-team appearance for Wigan.

Billy McKay
Northern Ireland international Billy joined the cobblers In 2008 from Leicester City. In his two seasons at the club, he made 88 appearances And scored 66 goals. He spent two seasons on loan to Wigan Before signing for them in 2016. Billy made 10 appearances for Wigan.

Richard O’Donnell
Richard played 10 games for Wigan between 2015-2016. He joined the Cobblers in 2018 was he made 19 appearances before activating a clause in his contract to move to Brentford.

Ryan Watson
After making more than 50 appearances in two years with Barnet, Watson spent the 2018/19 season helping MK Dons to a promotion, playing 28 times for the Dons. Scored at Wembley in the 2020 League 2 playoff final as the Cobblers beat Exeter City 4-0.

Ivan Toney
Toney made his way through the Cobblers academy in 2012 making over 50 appearances scoring 11 goals before being sold to Newcastle where he went out on loan to Wigan in 2017 making 24 appearances scoring 4 goals.
