As the Cobblers prepare to begin another EFL Trophy campaign, we take a look back at last season’s memorable run which took Northampton Town to within just one game of Wembley.
A Perfect Group Stage
Town were drawn alongside Chelsea Under-21s, Walsall and Shrewsbury Town in Southern Group C and couldn’t have asked for a better campaign.
The journey began at Sixfields with an impressive 3-0 victory over Chelsea Under-21s, with Kamarai Swyer, Michael Jacobs and Elliott List finding the net.
Next came a trip to Walsall, where the Cobblers continued their winning start with a 1-0 victory, before completing a perfect group stage by beating Shrewsbury Town 2-1 at Sixfields.

Wycombe Beaten at Sixfields
The Round of 32 brought Wycombe Wanderers to Sixfields.
First-half goals from Kai Edwards and Tyrese Fornah secured a comfortable 2-0 victory and sent Kevin Nolan’s side into the last 16. (BBC)
Six-Goal Thriller Against Walsall
A familiar opponent awaited in the next round as Walsall returned to face the Cobblers.
Town came out on top once again, this time in an entertaining 4-2 victory. Kamarai Swyer scored twice, while Sam Hoskins and Tom Eaves were also on target to book a place in the quarter-finals. (BBC)
One Step Closer to Wembley
The quarter-final saw Northampton travel to AFC Wimbledon, with Wembley beginning to feel within touching distance.
Jack Vale opened the scoring before Wimbledon equalised shortly after half-time. Tom Eaves then struck in the 73rd minute to secure a 2-1 victory and send the Cobblers into the semi-finals. (BBC)
Heartbreak at Luton
Just one game now separated Northampton Town from a first-ever EFL Trophy final.
The Cobblers travelled to Kenilworth Road to face Luton Town and made the perfect start when Kyle McAdam headed home his first senior goal after 17 minutes.
Town led at the break, but Nahki Wells equalised eight minutes into the second half before Liam Walsh struck in the 82nd minute to give Luton a 2-1 victory and end Northampton’s Wembley dream. (BBC)
It was a heartbreaking end, but an EFL Trophy campaign that provided plenty of memorable moments — seven games, six victories and just one defeat, with the Cobblers coming within 90 minutes of Wembley.
