Former Cobblers striker Andy Williams has announced his retirement from football, bringing the curtain down on a long and respected career in the game.

The experienced forward has called time after returning to Hereford FC, the club where his career first began, completing a full-circle moment after more than two decades in senior football.

Williams enjoyed a career that spanned multiple clubs across the English Football League, earning a reputation who consistently delivered goals and experience wherever he played.

He will be fondly remembered by Cobblers supporters for his role in the club’s successful 2019-20 campaign, as Northampton secured promotion to League One via the play-offs. His presence in the squad added valuable know-how during a season that ultimately ended in success at Wembley.

While not always the headline name, Williams’ contribution to that side was significant, offering leadership, professionalism and an ability to step up in important moments.

His return to Hereford in the latter stages of his career provided a fitting end, allowing him to finish where it all started. After a career lasting more than 20 years, Williams now steps away from the game with the respect of teammates, supporters and clubs across the country.

Northampton fans, in particular, will remember him as part of a promotion-winning squad that delivered one of the club’s modern-day highlights — a striker who played his part in a team that will not be forgotten anytime soon.
