Warren was a squad player at Sunderland making just 27 appearances in five seasons; however, one of those was as a substitute in the 1992 F.A. cup final when Sunderland lost to Manchester United.
He spent time out on loan to several clubs including Northampton where they were desperately trying to find a goal scorer.
His best spell came in Scottish football where he played nearly 200 games for Berwick, Morton Raith and Queen of the South.
He later became coach at Linwood for who his son played.
Warren competed in the ‘Regenburg Iron Man Triathlon in Gernany  which includes a 3.8 Km. swim a 180 Km. Cycle ride and a 42.2 Km. run and completed the course in 11 hours 14 minutes and 3 seconds.
Later a director of Greenock Morton
