Storylines – Ipswich

First time in 10 years

Tuesday nights game is the first time the Clubs have met since 2011 when the Cobblers beat Ipswich 2-1 at Portman Road in the Carling cup. The Cobblers have made 18 visits to Portman Road with only 3 wins and 5 draws.

Each of the last five meetings between Ipswich and Northampton have come in the League Cup – most recently in 2011 – with the Tractor Boys winning three of these games (D1 L1).

First league meeting in over 50 years.

This will be the first league meeting between Ipswich and Northampton in over 50 years, since a 1-1 draw between the sides in April 1967 in the second tier.

Tuesdays meeting between the two clubs will also be the first this season as the Cobblers Boxing Day fixture V Ipswich was postponed due to Covid in the Ipswich camp.

Old Faces

Two ex-Cobblers are in the Ipswich side Luke Chambers who came through the youth system at the Cobblers, and earned his first team place in 2002 before signing a professional contract in November 2003 Luke spent five seasons with the Cobblers making 151 appearances scoring one goal before joining Nottingham Forest In January 2007 for an undisclosed fee where he made 210 appearances.

David Cornell joined the Cobblers from Oldham in 2016 Making over 90 appearances in his four seasons with the club before moving to Ipswich in 2020 where is so far he’s made six first team appearances.
