Storylines – Burton

As we build-up to Saturdays game v BURTON at PTS Academy Stadium, we look at some storylines leading up to the game…

Accrington 0 Northampton 0 – League One

A poor match looked set to end goalless until Lang pounced on an error and fired home to give the Latics their first win in six matches, lifting them above the Cobblers in the process.

Wigan should have been ahead inside two minutes as Will Keane was denied one-on-one by Jonathan Mitchell before Thelo Aasgaard’s follow-up hit his own man and deflected wide.

Jack Sowerby and Peter Kioso had half-chances for the home side but Wigan dominated the first half and went close again when George Johnston missed his kick at a corner.

Goalless at the break, the second half was a desperately poor affair and a draw seemed inevitable with both teams struggling to create anything.

But with only eight minutes to go, a mistake by Cian Bolger allowed Lang to get through on goal and he emphatically slotted past Mitchell, clinching a precious win for Wigan.

Burton 1 Hull 0- League One

The deadline-day signing from Bristol City came on as a second-half substitute and made a huge impact, collecting Josh Parker’s cross before sliding the ball past George Long.

Keane Lewis-Potter headed an early Callum Elder cross over the bar as Hull looked to impose themselves on the game.

But City were almost behind shortly afterwards, a bursting run from Albion debutant Josh Earl providing Lucas Akins with a chance at the far post that was just dragged wide.

Dan Crowley curled an effort wide of the post just before the break but no attempts on target in the first half told its own story.

Greg Docherty clipped the top of the crossbar after 56 minutes with a rising 22-yard effort as Hull began to press.

Smith also went close, soon after coming on, with a fierce angled drive that Long in the Hull goal had to beat away, before eventually hitting the winner as the clock ticked down.

21 November 2020 – Burton 1 Northampton Town 3

Harry Smith’s double set Northampton on course for an important win as hosts Burton dropped to the foot of the League One table.

Smith’s first league goal of the campaign gave the Cobblers a second-minute lead, the striker finding space on the edge of the six-yard box to glance the ball in after Sam Hoskins had flicked on Alan Sheehan’s free-kick.

Smith’s second, midway through the second half, came as he raced onto a pass from Jack Sowerby to slip the ball beyond the advancing Ben Garratt and find the bottom corner.

Niall Ennis rattled the post for Albion moments later as the hosts looked for a lifeline but when substitute Chris Lines smashed home Mark Marshall’s cross after 81 minutes it was game over for Burton.

There was a consolation goal for Albion in stoppage time, Northampton defender Fraser Horsfall penalised for handling a cross as it came into the box giving Lucas Akins the chance to
