Played for both – Plymouth

Ahead of Tuesday nights game v Plymouth, we look at players that have played for both the Cobblers and Plymouth. How many can you remember?

Adrian Mark Burrows

Adrian joined the Cobblers from Mansfield in June 1982. The young central defender joined Mansfield the season they were relegated to the fourth and spent to further seasons at field mill before moving to Northampton after being offered a reduced contract by the Stags. 

At the County ground he became part of the central defence with Wakeley Gage and Russell Lewis until he decided that he would rather quit the game than continue to play division Four football. He made 106 appearances for the Cobblers scoring 5 goals. 

He joined Plymouth, firstly on loan and then for a £10,000 fee. He assisted Plymouth into division two giving the club ten seasons except for a short stay at Southend on loan during the 1987-88 season. At Plymouth he was being treated for an injury with the ‘hot and cold’ treatment when it went wrong and he ended up in hospital with burns that required skin grafts. 

Peter Gilbert (Header Image)

Peter joined Plymouth on a free transfer from Birmingham in July 2002. Helped Plymouth notch up a record of  seven consecutive clean sheets a Plymouth record. He made 84 appearances for Plymouth scoring 2 goals. 

Peter was offered terms by the Cobblers for the 2010-11 season but stalled and later his proposed contract was withdrawn after he agreed to sign for Sturrock again at Southend although in administration they can not offer new contracts until October. Peter was one of the few Cobblers players to be sent off on his debut. Pete made 31 appearances. 

Fredrick Forbes

In March 1925 Plymouth signed Fredrick to help with their promotion push to division two. He was to spend five seasons with the club each timer they just missed out on promotion.  Fredrick made 165 appearances for Plymouth scoring 53 goals. 

Fredrick joined the Cobblers in July 1932 making 37 appearances scoring 3 goals. 

Mike Everitt

Mike joined the Cobblers from Arsenal in 1961, when the Cobblers spent £4,000 on the utility player. Mike spent seven years at the County ground playing and scoring in every division of the League for Northampton. He also wore every outfield shirt number except 5 and 11.  

While the club was playing in division one he was linked with both Tottenham and Liverpool but the following season he put in a transfer request after training ground incident and moved to Plymouth Argyle. 

He moved to Plymouth for £12,000 making just 31 appearances before moving to Brighton.

Stephen Perrin

Stephen Joined Plymouth from Crystal Palace in March 1975. He made 40 appearances for Plymouth scoring 6 goals. After losing his place with Palace he joined Plymouth and although he only netted six goals in 40 games for them he was sold to Portsmouth for £20,000. 

On his release he joined Hillingdon and concentrated on his teaching but Northampton brought him back into league football with an agreement that he would not be called on to play in reserve games. Stephen made 25 appearance for the Cobblers scoring 6 goals.

Chris Hargreaves

in July 1998 when he joined Plymouth Argyle on a free transfer. He was a regular in the Argyle side, leaving to join the Cobblers on a free transfer in June 2000. He was Northampton’s player of the year in the 2001–02 season, signing a new two-year contract in July 2002.

Hargreaves made over 150 league appearances for Northampton, leaving to join Brentford in June 2004.

Douglas Anderson

Douglas joined Plymouth from Tranmere in August 1987 making just 21 appearances. He made 2 loan spells with Cambridge and the Cobblers in his time at the Cobblers he made 6 appearances before moving back to Hong Kong where he was born. 

Gregory Campbell

After a spell in Europe Greg returned to England and gave two seasons to Plymouth but was mainly used as a fringe player. He made 39 appearances scoring 3 goals. Theo Foley brought him to Northampton and although he was not a prolific scorer he was involved in some of his team-mates goals. He made 58 appearances scoring 8 goals for the Cobblers. 

Gregg Wylde

Gregg had two spells with Plymouth in his first spell during 2015- 2016 season, Gregg played 52 games for Argyle, scoring 7 goals, the most notable of which coming on 16 April 2016, when he scored an 86th-minute winner against Portsmouth. 

In December 2016, Gregg joined the Cobblers on loan from Millwall until the end of the season. He made just 5 appearances for the Cobblers. But did score a fantastic goal V MK Dons at Stadium MK.

Gregg retuned to Plymouth in 2017 in Leauge One where gain he scored on his debut. He made 16 appearances for Plymouth in his second spell. 

Carlo Corazzin

Carlo joined Plymouth in March 1996 for a fee of £150,000 making 85 appearances in the 2 and a half seasons he was there. Carlo joined the Cobblers as a free agent when his Plymouth side were relegated from Division Two.  

He made a sparkling debut with a tremendous goal from a  25-yard free kick against Stoke despite the club losing the game 1-3. It his two seasons at Northampton he was the top scorer both times and saw the club relegated to division three and back again! Carlo made 89 appearances scoring 32 goals. 

Dean Crowe

Dean joined the Cobblers on loan from Stoke in February 2000.  Dean would remember his supposed debut for Northampton he travelled from Stoke to Northampton then up to Carlisle only to find the game had been postponed. Dean made just 5 appearance for the Cobblers. 

The five foot five inch striker spent most of his Stoke career out on loan and in 2001 joined Plymouth for a short spell who eventually won division three. 

Stephen Guinan 

Stephen joined Plymouth in loan in March 1999 before signing a contact a year later. In total he made a total of 46 appearances scoring 10 goals. He joined the Cobblers on a free transfer in May 2009 where the made 50 appearances scoring 9 goals.

Terry Austin

In three and a half years Terry made only a handful of appearances so jumped at the chance of joining Plymouth as past of the deal that saw Paul Mariner, later to play for England, move the other way. Plymouth were relegated to division three that season and fighting hard to stay in the division the following season but Terry was on the move again, this time Walsall. 

After twelve months at Fellows Park Terry was on the move again this time to Mansfield in a part exchange with Dave Syrett who would later join Northampton. Despite netting 19 league goals in the 1979-80 season Mansfield were relegated to the fourth division.  

Haram Boateng

Haram joined both the Cobblers and Plymouth on loan from Crystal Palace. He joined Plymouth in July 2015 making 30 appearances, scoring 2 goals. He joined the Cobblers in the January transfer window of 2017 where he made 16 appearances. 

Anthony Witter

Tony had a short spell at Northampton as a non-contract player covering for injuries. His stay at Sixfields was short but in that time he did turn out v Tottenham in the league cup.  

Tony held the record for the quickest goal for Plymouth in the match v Leicester when he netted during the 2nd. Minute of his debut. It has since been beat by Jamie Mackie.

Lloyd Jones

Lloyd is currently in his second spell with the Cobblers he has made 20 appearances for the Cobblers so far. He also made 10 appearances for Plymouth scoring one goal.

Anthony Charles

Charles joined the Cobblers in March 2012 on an initial contract to the end of the season. Having made 20 appearances in all competitions, Charles left the club in January 2013 after having his contract terminated, He joined Plymouth Argle for the remainder of the 2012–13 season. He made 11 appearances for the club before being released at the end of the campaign. 

Paul Anderson

Paul made his first appearance at the Cobblers in 2016 – 2017 season making 36 appearances scoring 6 goals. He joined Plymouth in 2019 making just 4 appearances. Before joining the Cobblers again until 2020 making 14 appearances.
