To keep you entertained during these times I’m going to be taking you down memory lane and having a look back at the 1986/87 championship-winning seasons. Today we have skipped forward to the 29th April where the Cobblers where promoted. Here’s what happened.

April 29 - Northampton Town 2 Crewe Alexandra 1

AT LAST!

ON A NIGHT of cascading champagne, the Cobblers clinched the title - admittedly at this stage only on goal difference – against Crewe.

The club took a mild gamble by going ahead with a pre-match lap of honour and indulging in a big County Ground party. Fortunately, Crewe was not good enough to be party poopers, and wild scenes of delight greeted a 2-1 win with goals from David Gilbert (yet another penalty) and from departing hero Richard Hill.

He led the celebrations at the end, fulfilling his promise to go out with a roar and not a whisper. Peter Bodak did his best to dampen proceedings with a late goal, but nothing was going to stop the fans letting their hair down.

Make sure you keep an eye on our social media for many more looking back articles plus much more. Keeping you entertained during this time. Much of this information has been found from Frank Grandes records and Northampton Chronicle and Echo.
