ONE TO WATCH – Joe Ironside

Forward Joe Ironside is Macclesfield’s leading goalscorer this season with seven goals, six coming in the league and one in the Leasing.Com Trophy.

Ironside found the net most recently in Macclesfield’s win over Forest Green on the weekend, so the striker will be brimming with confidence come Tuesday night. The 26-year-old was signed from Kidderminster Harriers where he was a prolific goalscorer, finding the net 42 times in 82 games over three seasons. Ironside also came through the Sheffield United academy and made 16 appearances for the Blades in League One.

FLASHBACK

Here is a look back at some of the games between the Cobblers and the Silks 3 wins and 3 losses for the Cobblers with 4 of these games coming at home.

12/03/2011 – Sixfields Stadium – League Two – 0-1

Colin Daniel’s strike secured victory for Macclesfield as Northampton fell to their fourth straight defeat. The visitors dominated the first half, with Northampton keeper Chris Dunn denying Tyrone Barnett, who also saw a goal-bound shot blocked by Marcus Hall.

Macclesfield made the breakthrough nine minutes after the restart, with Daniel driving home from the edge of the area. Josh Walker and Andy Holt both went close for the home side but were denied by fingertip saves from Jose Veiga.

Northampton manager Gary Johnson told BBC Radio Northampton:

“They need a bit of a confidence boost and the only way to get that is to get a result.

“It was a poor performance; you want to be better than that at home.

“But if one of the opportunities had gone in it might have been different.”

23/02/2012 – Sixfields Stadium – League Two – 3-2

A clinical hat-trick from Matt Crooks saw Northampton Town record a comprehensive 5-0 victory over League Two bottom side Macclesfield Town

Three goals from Crooks and a composed finish from Daniel Powell put the Cobblers four goals ahead at the break before Aaron Pierre added the gloss late on to secure the visitors their first away league victory since August. Crooks – who had not previously scored in over a month – gave Northampton the lead after 23 minutes with a superb curling effort from the edge of the area.

He doubled the advantage for Keith Curle’s side on the 33-minute mark as he turned in a Jack Bridge cross from close range before Powell capitalised on a sloppy error to put Northampton 3-0 up moments later.

The Cobblers’ first-half display was made all the sweeter when Crooks, moving onto his favoured right foot, curled another delightful strike into the top corner. Northampton rounded off their emphatic victory in the 93rd minute when Pierre poked the ball home.

19/04/2019 – Sixfields Stadium – League Two – 3-1

Sol Campbell’s Macclesfield saw their survival hopes dealt a blow with a 3-1 defeat to Northampton.

Dean Bowditch and Harry Smith exchanged first-half goals but Daniel Powell and Junior Morias both netted after the break to hand the Cobblers their first win in over a month. David Cornell kept out Ben Stephens and Nathan Cameron before Smith shot over as Macclesfield began on the front foot.

But the visitors fell behind after 25 minutes when Jordan Turnbull’s clipped cross was neatly volleyed into the bottom corner by Bowditch. Smith’s header was then ruled out for offside but he was not to be denied seven minutes before half-time when he lobbed Cornell after being released by Stephens’ pass.

Kieran O’Hara denied George Cox early in the second half but there was nothing he could do when Powell latched onto a short back header and slotted home just shy of the hour-mark. Macclesfield nearly hit back through Elliott Durrell’s terrific free-kick but their fate was sealed in stoppage-time when Powell teed up Morias for a tap-in.
