Cobblers Past

History Never Forgotten

#LifeAfterTown – Jim Whitley

Full back Jim had a 13 match loan spell at Sixfields in February 2001. He was on the books of Manchester City and was loaned out to Blackpool, Norwich and Swindon as well as the Cobblers ending his football career with Wrexham. Jim had a Zambian mother, where he was born and an Irish father hence he won caps at full and ‘B’ internationals for Northern Ireland. When he and his family first arrived in Wales it was golf that Jim took up and he had a low handicap.

He also took his GCSE’s and did well at art hence when his football days ended he picked up paints and brush excelling at Chiaroscuro (dramatic lighting) and works in portraits and pastels.

He has held several exhibitions and Manchester City invited him to paint portraits of the club’s legends. Jim is also handy with a microphone and has appeared at the royal concert hall as Sammy Davis Junior in a tribute act of the ratpack.

In 2017 Jim was getting ready to go on a 49-show tour playing Sammy Davis Jr in a stage production called Crooners, in which he gets to show off his incredible tap dancing skills.

Jim said to Sun Sport

“I was in the school choir as a kid in Wrexham, and I also played flute in the school band,” he said.

“But when I got to 14-years-old football took over and I put performing to one side to focus on the game.”
