John spent two seasons with Celtic but only played in one Scottish League cup match. He was later part of the Carlisle side that won promotion to the first division in 1974.

John also saw relegation to the second division and back to the first division with Tottenham. While recovering from a long term injury at Tottenham he took up cartoon drawing several of them often appeared in the Spurs programme.

John played for Tampa Bay Rowdies over seven years and won an NASL runner up medal in 1979. While youth team coach at Gillingham he was forced out of retirement to play in 2 league cup games.

He was assistant to Glen Hoddle at Swindon and was offered the number 2 job at Chelsea when Hoddle moved but stayed at Swindon as manager, He was later assistant manager at Reading and Wycombe before taking over as manager of the Buckinghamshire club.

After six months as Northampton manager, John left for a personal reason. John later scouted for Southampton, was assistant manager at Ipswich and QPR and later scouted for MK Dons.
