A new feature where we will be looking into the careers of some ex-cobblers managers. Firstly we start with Stuart Gray who managed the Cobblers from January 2007 – September 2009.
Stuart turned professional at Nottingham Forrest after having trials with local club Hull City.
He spent three seasons at Forest and made his debut V Manchester City. In the same week, he played in the World Cup Championship in Tokyo, losing 0-1 to national of Uruguay. He moved on and after a season with Bolton, Stuart spent five seasons with Barnsley and four with Aston Villa, being captain at both clubs.
While at Barnsley he missed 18 months through injury but switched from midfield to full-back on his return and captained the side. Stuart was Barnsley’s top scorer in 1986-87 playing in defence and midfield and only four of his goals came from the penalty spot.
He quit professional football in 1993 due to a long-term injury having only played 25 times for Southampton in three years. Prior to joining the Cobblers, Stuart managed Southampton and coached at Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Wolves.
After spending two and a half years at Sixfields, Stuart managed Sheffield Wednesday and has been a coach at Burnley, Portsmouth and Fulham.
Stuart Gray was sacked from the Cobblers after a poor run of form culminating in a 3-1 home defeat to Barnet in their last League Two fixture.
