Cobblers Last away match at Colchester

Northampton Town claimed their first League Two win of the season after with a 2-1 victory at Colchester United.

The Cobblers almost scored after 26 seconds through Kevin Van Veen, who blasted over from Junior Morais’s pass.

Jack Bridge fired straight at Colchester goalkeeper Dillon Barnes while Matt Crooks, Sam Hoskins and Sam Foley also went close, as the Cobblers pressed.

Northampton went ahead less than three minutes after half-time through Crooks, who advanced towards goal before firing home a low 25-yard shot.

Barnes then denied Crooks but Colchester midfielder Harry Pell’s header was saved by keeper David Cornell and substitute Luke Norris’s header hit the bar.

Tom Eastman cleared Van Veen’s effort off the line before Billy Waters doubled Northampton’s lead in the first minute of stoppage-time when he flicked home from close range, after fellow substitute Andy Williams had helped on Sam Hoskins’ pass.

Colchester pulled a goal back in the fifth minute of stoppage time through Aaron Pierre’s own goal after Cornell had denied Sammie Szmodics, but Northampton claimed victory.

Last time out

A controversial Andy Williams strike ended Swindon’s unbeaten start in League Two as the Robins lost at home to Northampton to drop off the top of the table.

Former Swindon striker Williams crashed a half-volley in off the inside of the near post after 67 minutes but appeared to be offside as the ball reached his feet.

It led to lengthy complaints from Swindon players, management staff and fans – however, the minds of the officials were not changed.

Swindon would have been level in the 73rd minute had Adam May kept his shot from about 12 yards down, but instead, it flew over the bar as Northampton clung onto their lead.

Swindon’s Lloyd Isgrove and Northampton’s Jordan Turnbull shot over and wide respectively in the first half while Jordan Lyden had a header well tipped over the bar by Cobblers keeper David Cornell in the second.

Tyler Reid and Michael Doughty also came close to level for the hosts, with Reid having an effort deflected wide and Doughty’s last-gasp free-kick going over.

Grimsby came from 2-0 down to deny Colchester a first League Two win of the season with a late-earned 2-2 draw.

Frank Nouble and Luke Norris had seemingly put the visitors in control, but James Hanson’s penalty and Matt Green’s volley earned the hosts a point.

Colchester took the lead against the run of play, with Nouble slamming the ball home in the 25th minute after the hosts had failed to clear it from deep inside their half.

Nouble was once again involved as he sent the ball to the back post during stoppage time of the first half, where Norris managed to beat a couple of Grimsby defenders to it and head Colchester into a 2-0 lead.

Grimsby immediately hit back in the second half when Moses Ogbu was bundled over in the penalty area, with Hanson burying his 48th-minute penalty with aplomb.

Colchester appeared to be heading for victory, but Green struck in the 87th minute with a sweetly struck volley to earn Grimsby a hard-fought point.
