Come On Cobblers

Head to Head

Heres what happened when the Cobblers played Oldham last season;

Northampton ended the season in style as they came from behind to earn a crushing victory at mid-table rivals Oldham.

Andy Williams scored a brace for the Cobblers, who recorded only their second win in nine matches.

Oldham took an early lead when Callum Lang burst forward from deep and, after the ball broke loose, Johan Branger fired in off the post from 16 yards.

But Northampton’s fightback started after 22 minutes as the home defence failed to clear a set-piece and Sam Hoskins lashed a 20-yard drive into the top corner.

The visitors were in front just before the half-hour as Aaron Pierre headed home powerfully after Hoskins crossed from the right.

With Oldham in disarray, Williams made it 3-1 before the break when he converted from close range after Daniel Powell hit the woodwork.

Williams pounced again just after half-time by finishing neatly from Sam Foley’s cross, though Oldham responded when Branger struck the bar and Lang followed in to score.

Substitute Junior Morias had the final say after 80 minutes, rounding off a quick Northampton counter-attack to complete the rout.

Last 6 away

Northampton’s troubles deepened as they slumped to a crushing defeat at Oldham.

The Cobblers remain in the League One drop zone, and are winless in six matches in all competitions, after being outclassed by a rampant home side.

Oldham needed just four minutes to go in front as midfielder Jack Byrne took possession 25 yards from goal and hit a superb curling effort into the top corner.

Northampton’s Matt Crooks fired just wide, but the Latics doubled their lead after 26 minutes when Byrne delivered a left-wing corner and Tope Obadeyi headed in from six yards.

It was 3-0 in first-half injury-time, with Byrne’s 20-yard drive taking a deflection on its way inside the near post.

Northampton have gifted a lifeline after 47 minutes as Sam Foley drilled into the unguarded net after Oldham goalkeeper Johny Placide was robbed of possession.

Oldham, however, grabbed their fourth goal on the hour mark when Eoin Doyle’s shot was saved by David Cornell and Gevaro Nepomuceno slid in the loose ball.

Craig Davies had the final word in stoppage time with a point-blank finish from fellow substitute Aaron Holloway’s cross.

Northampton lAST GAME

Northampton made it three wins in a row in League Two with a home victory over Cambridge United.

Both goals came in the first half as Harry Smith’s fine finish and an own goal from George Taft lifted the Cobblers to within three points of the top seven.

Cambridge goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov was called into action to tip over Scott Wharton’s header before opposite number David Cornell produced an equally good stop from Paul Lewis midway through the first half.

Northampton moved in front after 26 minutes when Smith latched onto Nicky Adams’ through ball and applied a composed finish into the bottom corner.

Mitov was quick off his line to deny Smith a second but the Cobblers striker played a role in doubling the lead when his cross was diverted into the net by Taft in first-half stoppage time.

Mitov stood tall to prevent Smith adding a third shortly after half-time while Cornell was at his best to thwart Marc Richards on his return to Sixfields as Northampton kept a third straight clean sheet.

Oldhams Last Game

Port Vale maintained their unbeaten home start to the league season following a goalless draw against Oldham Athletic.

Visiting goalkeeper Zeus de la Paz made a string of fine saves help his side pick up a point, although Oldham remain winless on the road since August.

Nathan Smith chested down Richie Bennett’s header, with his subsequent strike being kept out by the Curacao international, who also made three superb stops just before the half time.

First he tipped David Amoo’s header wide, before keeping out Rhys Browne with his feet after a dazzling run.

Cristian Montano was also frustrated by de la Paz with a shot from the edge of the box.

After the restart, Desire Azankpo had a chance to put Oldham ahead after getting in behind the hosts’ defence but he could not hit the target.

On the hour mark, Vale midfielder Will Atkinson, who had only been on the pitch for seconds after replacing Jake Taylor, wasted a glorious chance to open the scoring when he scuffed his effort over.

Azankpo then squandered the best chance to wrap the game up when he inexplicably blasted over from six yards late on as the spoils were shared.

Away Fan Guide

Boundary Park (capacity 13,512)

Boundary Park has been home to Oldham Athletic since 1904 although the capacity, which was once nearly 50,000 have been significantly reduced over the years, and is now all-seated. The stadium famously had a plastic pitch between 1986 and 1991, though it was pulled up when they were promoted to the top flight because of league rules.

The most recent addition to the stadium is The Joe Royle Stand, which was opened in 2014, and named in 2018. It is a single-tiered stand which contains corporate hospitality, club offices, and exhibition space. It gives the stadium a much more modern look to it. However, the stadium also has large floodlight pylons in each of the four corners, which means the stadium retains a traditional feel.

Away fans visiting Boundary Park are located in the Chadderton Road End, with an allocation of just under 4,000.
