It all began close to the River Thames in East Steet (now known as Eastmoor), which today lies between Woolwich Road and the Thames Barrier. On June 9th, 1905, a group of teenagers who once kicked a ball around that very street decided to get together and form a fully-fledged football club that was to become Charlton Athletic.
After relegation from the Premier League, Alan Curbishley managed to keep together the core of his side with Danny Mills the only major departure in the summer of 1999 when he joined Leeds United for £4.1m.
2019 saw Charlton storm the league, losing only twice in the new year as they narrowly missed out on automatic promotion.
Charlton would face Doncaster Rovers in the play-off semi-final, with Charlton winning 2-1 away before a Doncaster comeback forced a dramatic penalty shootout which The Addicks edged.
Storylines – Charlton
We look at some storylines leading up to this afternoons game.
Northampton 4 Portsmouth 1- League One
Ryan Watson scored twice in two minutes before Fraser Horsfall and Sam Hoskins made it 4-0 at the break and the visitors never had any way back.
The win took the Cobblers two points clear of the relegation zone.
The game started slowly but it soon burst into life in dramatic fashion.
Watson opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Mickel Miller was fouled and he curled a superb free-kick into the top corner, leaving Craig MacGillivray grasping at thin air.
And the in-form midfielder wasted no time in scoring his second, heading in Miller’s corner just two minutes later, for his sixth goal in five games.
Northampton had a third just past the half-hour as another Miller corner caused problems and Horsfall forced the ball home from close range.
And it got even better when Hoskins’ wonderful effort floated over a stranded MacGillivray after the keeper had come out of his area to head a ball clear.
Portsmouth tried to get back into the game in the second half as Jordy Hiwula dragged a shot just wide before Ellis Harrison scored from the spot after Harvey White was brought down, but that was scant consolation.
Oxford 0 Charlton 0- League One
Referee Tom Nield pointed to the spot when Addicks substitute Jayden Stockley was tripped by Alex Gorrin with less than a minute to go.
But Stevens diverted Ronnie Schwartz’s powerfully-struck penalty over the bar.
The stalemate was Oxford’s third successive draw.
The teams joined a minute’s applause before kick-off for former Oxford midfielder and player-manager Mickey Lewis, who died on Friday at the age of 56.
Jake Forster-Caskey twice went close for the visitors in a fiercely competitive first half.
The midfielder shot over from a tight angle and later headed Chris Gunter’s right-wing cross narrowly over the bar.
The U’s came closest to breaking through when Anthony Forde smashed a 20-yard drive against the post after 62 minutes.
Charlton’s Liam Millar then curled an effort just past the far upright from the same distance before Stevens’ late heroics ensured the points were shared.
24/11/20 – The Cobblers 0 Charlton 2
Substitute Darren Pratley broke the deadlock shortly after half-time and then Jack Sowerby’s own goal confirmed a fourth defeat in five League One games for the Cobblers.
Northampton made the brighter start and would have been ahead if not for the reactions of Ben Amos who brilliantly denied Sam Hoskins at close range.
That was the only clear chance of a lacklustre first half, although Northampton felt they should have had a penalty after Danny Rose went down in the box.
The visitors were ahead out of the blue after 54 minutes when Ryan Inniss nodded down a corner and Pratley, only just off the bench, smacked into the roof of the net.
Paul Smyth missed a great chance for 2-0 but it did not matter as the visitors doubled their lead on the hour when Alfie Doughty’s low cross was turned into his own net by Sowerby.
Benny Ashley-Seal almost got Northampton back into it but he shot over and Charlton saw out a third successive win.
