History Never Forgotten

We look at a few players that have played for both the Cobblers and Rovers.

Jonny Maxted – Goalkeeper

27 year old Maxted started his career at Doncaster Rovers before spells at both Forest Green Rovers and Accrington Stanley.

He joined Exeter City in 2019 and played 39 times for the Grecians, helping them achieve two top ten League 2 finishes in his two seasons at St James Park, playing 27 times as the Grecians came fourth in 2019/20.

Adam Smith – Goalkeeper

The 28 year old joined Middlesbrough from Leicester City in 2010 and spent 5 years with the Foxes, having loan spells at Chesterfield, Lincoln City, Stevenage, Cambridge United and Mansfield Town.

After his Leauge two wining season with the Cobblers he went on to Bristol Rovers and Forest Green Rovers were he made only 8 appearances but spent 3 seasons on loan to Yeovil Town. Before he signed on the books for Stevenage.

Steve Arnold – Goalkeeper

After signing professional with Norwich City, 6ft 5in Arnold made his Football League debut with Stevenage, making 31 appearances while at Broadhall Way.
He twice helped Forest Green Rovers to the National League play offs making 45 appearances, with his most recent club being Shrewsbury Town, whom he joined in July 2018.

The 32 year old played 32 times for the Shrews in 2018/19, becoming the club’s first choice keeper. After making 15 appearances for the Cobblers he joined Southend.

Joseph Mills – Wing back

The former Forest Green Rovers skipper rejected new terms with the New Lawn club to make the move to Sixfields Stadium back in August 2020.

Mills made 70 appearances for Rovers in the last two seasons, scoring 12 goals, after previously playing for Perth Glory in Australia.

He began his career at Southampton where he made 34 appearances and gained experience via various loan spells.

He moved on to Reading, Burnley and Oldham before heading out to Australia and then returned to England with Forest Green in a career that has seen him make nearly 300 senior appearances and score 17 goals.
