History Never Forgotten

Ahead of Tuesdays game v Charlton we look at some players that have played for Both Charlton and The Cobblers.

Mark Marshall (Header Image)

In June 2017, Marshall signed a two-year contract with Charlton Athletic after being released form Bradford City. However he missed much of the opening three months of the 2017-18 season after picking up an injury during pre-season. 

He went on to score two goals in 31 games to help Charlton qualify for the play-offs, but didn’t feature in Charlton’s 2-1 win over Sunderland and was released at the end of the 18-19 season.

Mark joined the Cobblers in January 2020 with Marshall making 24 game. 

Ricky Holmes

On 2 January 2015, Holmes joined the Cobblers on an initial one-month loan deal.  On 27 January 2015, after appearing in four matches and scoring once, he signed a 2½-year permanent deal with the club. Making 49 appearances and scored 14 appearances. 

He joined Charlton in in 2016 making 58 appearances and scoring 19 goals. 

Theo Foley

He spent just over five seasons at St. James Park and married an Exeter girl but in the 1961 close season he asked for a transfer. 

Dave Bowen signed him for Northampton Town and he never looked back. 

He captained the club as they rose through the divisions but when he was needed the most in division one injury took its toll. 

He also missed a large chunk of the following season (66-67) and was released at the end of it. 

Theo was offered a coaching job with Northampton but instead decided to continue playing joining Charlton as player coach.  In January 1970 he was promoted to assistant manager three months later he was acting manager being made up to team manager in the close season. 

He was sacked in April 1974 just Days after receiving a rose bowl from the supporters and ten days before Charlton were awarded £4,000 for being one of the highest scoring clubs.  After a spell with Dulwich Hamlet as coach and advisor he joined L.B.C. and took on broadcasting duties. 

Geoff Scott 

Before joining the Cobbler’s in 1984, Geoff played as a defender for Stoke City, Leicester City, Birmingham City, Charlton Athletic and Middlesbrough. 

His time at the County Ground was short, the club were struggling at the time and there was a large turnover of players.  He was to join Chesterfield but while travelling up to sign on the deal was called off. 

He wound down his career with Cambridge United where injury ended his playing days, After a spell as manager of Highgate he took a degree in business studies and worked for a while for British Telecom.  In 2010 he was chief executive for XPRO who looked after the health and welfare of ex professional footballers.

Chris Wilder

As a player Chris made 3 loan appearances for Charlton between 1990 – 1991 when he was on loan from Sheffield United. He came on loan to the the Cobblers in 1998 making just 1 appearance. 

Marvin Sordell 

Marvin made a loan move to Charlton from Bolton in 2013 Sordell made 35 loan appearances for the Addicks in addition to his eight goals.

In January 2019 the Cobblers signed Sordell he made just 8 appearances before retiring for mental heath reasons. 

Danny Green

Green began his career with the youth system at Charlton Athletic before being released at the age of 15. He then signed for Northampton Town, and moved to Nottingham Forest in 2004. In 2008, Green was released by Nottingham Forest after picking up a bad injury and signed for Conference South club Bishop’s Stortford after meeting manager Martin Hayes on a coaching course.

Andy Todd

In Charlton’s first season back in the Premiership, Todd scored his first and what turned out to be only Charlton goal against Leicester City in April 2001. Todd scored three goals in twelve league games for the Mariners, helping the club keep their place in the division.

On 24 November 2008, Todd joined Northampton Town of League One on loan until 3 January 2009. This was the first time Todd had played outside the top two tiers of English football. On 25 November 2008, Todd made his debut for The Cobblers in 2–1 victory against Leeds United.

Dietmar Bruck

Dietmar joined Charlton in October 1970 for £15,00 and made a 56 appearances. He joined the Cobblers just two years later making 41 appearances before leaving in 1974 and joining local side Nuneaton Borough. 

Paul Curtis 

Paul signed professional terms for Charlton on his 18th. Birthday after serving an apprenticeship with the club. 

He was a regular in the side for the following three seasons but found himself released in 1985. 

He became one of Graham Carr’s first signings when taking over the hot seat at Northampton. 

When Graham Reed moved from the forwards to full back Paul lost his place and left at the end of his first season. 

He had spells with Kettering and Corby town while working as a sales negotiator for an estate agents. 

He also played for the famous local ‘Nexday’ Sunday side that won the F. A. Sunday cup. 

Jason Lee

Jason started his career at Charlton in June 1989making 11 appearances  scoring 3 goals. 

Jason had a short spell at Northampton as ‘back up’ as the team strove for promotion during the 20005-06 season.  He was released at the end of the season and moved to Notts County. 

PAUL RACHUBKA 

Paul joined Northampton on loan from Charlton when Lee Harper was indisposed after injuring his hand punching a dressing room door out of frustration! 

Paul conceded just 10 goals in his eleven games and became a crowd favourite.  

Paul made his debut for Manchester United as a substitute in the world club cup final in Brazil v South Melbourne in front of  60,000
