Saturday the 15th if January 1996 the Cobblers headed to a snowy Upton Park to face West Ham United. The Came saw 1 change from the side that beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at the County ground one week prior as Hall replace Martin who dropped to substitute.

The snow had been falling heavy so the Cobblers had to book a hotel near the ground to make sure they where able to be there on time and so they could be safe after the game. Prior to the game the Cobblers spent three days at Broadstairs.

Referee Mr P Walters saw the Cobblers score first as Broadfoot put Brown through and he drew Standen before putting the ball into the net. However before the end of the first half Mr Walters awarded the home side a penalty Coe dropped a shot , Britt headed towards goal,, Everitt fisted over the bar, Brown converted the penalty.

A funny fact was that Joe Kiernan played the whole game in baseball boots and the press recorded an attendance of 20,745.

  • Flashback: The Great Escape – Northampton Town’s Stunning Comeback at Gay Meadow
Date: 8 May 1993Location: Gay Meadow, ShrewsburyAttendance: 6,612 On a tense spring afternoon in May 1993, Northampton Town pulled off one of the most dramatic escapes in their history — a comeback victory over Shrewsbury Town that not only stunned the home crowd but also secured the Cobblers’ survival in Division Three. The odds were firmly stacked against them. Sitting precariously near the bottom of the table, Northampton knew only a win would do — and even then, their fate partly lay in the hands of other results. The game couldn’t have started much worse for the Cobblers. Shrewsbury were two goals to the good within the first half hour. Lynch opened the scoring in the 24th minute, turning in a precise Smith free kick, before a defensive error from Angus gifted Griffiths a chance to make it 2–0 — which he duly took. But what followed was a second-half turnaround that would go down in club folklore. Leading by example on his 250th League appearance, Phil Chard began the fightback in the 51st minute, capitalizing on a poor back pass from Turner to slot past Edwards. Belief surged through the Cobblers’ ranks. In the 72nd minute, substitute Gavin leveled the score, seizing on a miskicked clearance by Turner after a dangerous cross from Wilkin. But Northampton weren’t finished. With just six minutes left on the clock, Gavin struck again — this time charging down a panicked clearance from the Shrewsbury keeper and bundling the ball into the net to complete a stunning comeback. The final whistle brought scenes of joy and relief. Northampton Town had done enough. Although Hereford’s 1–0 win over Halifax meant heartbreak for the Shaymen, the Cobblers had pulled off their great escape — avoiding the drop with grit, determination, and a bit of late drama. Statistically, Northampton dominated: 8 shots to Shrewsbury’s 4, and 7 corners to the home side’s 3. Even the bookings — Chard and Terry — reflected a team that refused to go down without a fight. Over three decades on, that afternoon at Gay Meadow remains a defining moment for Northampton Town… Read more: Flashback: The Great Escape – Northampton Town’s Stunning Comeback at Gay Meadow
  • 🔙 Flashback: Cudone and Cooper Fire Cobblers Women to Historic Promotion
Date: Sunday 8th May 2022Location: Harpole Playing Fields It was a landmark day in the history of Northampton Town Women as they secured promotion to the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands with a commanding 2-0 victory over Lincoln United — sealing the East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League Premier Division title with two games to spare. On that decisive Sunday, goals from Leah Cudone and Charlie Cooper crowned a superb season for the Cobblers, whose dominance had been building steadily under the guidance of joint managers Lou Barry and Josh Oldfield. The managers made five changes from the side that had beaten Rise Park midweek, including a first start for Favour Omenazu, and returns to the XI for Fay Noble and Cudone — changes that would prove pivotal. Although the first half saw possession evenly split, it was the home side who looked the more dangerous throughout. Early chances fell to Beth Artemiou, who forced Lincoln keeper Amy Hood into a smart stop within two minutes, and Alex Dicks, whose effort was blocked after a dangerous cross-goal strike. Lincoln’s only real threat before the break was a speculative free-kick from Olivia Smith that clipped the crossbar, but Northampton’s pressure finally told 10 minutes before half-time. A sublime pass from Rachael Mumford sliced through the Lincoln defence, and Cudone made no mistake — slotting home clinically to give the Cobblers a deserved lead. Dicks nearly made it two moments before the interval, dancing through the box only to see her low strike slide agonizingly wide. The second half was more balanced, with both teams battling for territory but creating little. Bianca Luttman was alert to snuff out a Lincoln cross, and Jo Daniel was on hand to mop up the danger as the visitors searched for a way back in. But Northampton weren’t finished. With 10 minutes left, substitute Charlie Cooper met Artemiou’s deep cross at the far post and hooked it in off the upright — a moment that not only sealed the three points but ignited jubilant celebrations around Harpole. The final whistle confirmed what fans and players had been dreaming of all season: promotion secured, champions crowned, and the promise of a new chapter in the FA Women’s National League. Barry and Oldfield’s side still had two games to play, including a Thursday night clash with Leicester City Ladies, but their league legacy was already written. Avoiding defeat in those matches would see them finish the campaign unbeaten— a fitting finale for a team that had captured hearts and headlines all season long.
