Stalemate at Gresty Road in a Four-Goal Thriller
In a pulsating League One clash at Gresty Road, Northampton Town battled back twice to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Crewe Alexandra in front of 5,553 spectators – but it could’ve been worse for the Cobblers had Crewe winger Ryan Lowe taken a golden late chance.
Lowe had already been a central figure in the match, giving the hosts a dream start after just seven minutes with a thunderous 18-yard volley that left Lee Harper with no chance. But the Cobblers responded swiftly. Just five minutes later, veteran striker Scott McGleish continued his fine scoring form by converting a dangerous cross from Pedj Bojic to bring Northampton level.
Crewe reclaimed the lead midway through the first half when Lowe turned provider, delivering a pinpoint cross that David Vaughan nodded home from close range. Again, Northampton refused to roll over. Bojic was involved once more, threading a pass to Andy Kirk who coolly slotted past Crewe keeper Ben Williams on 42 minutes to make it 2-2 before the break.
The second half saw chances for both sides, but it was Lowe who had the clearest opportunity to seal the game. With time running out, he found himself one-on-one with Harper, but his shot lacked conviction and the Northampton keeper stood firm, preserving a valuable away point.
Cobblers bossed the midfield for long spells, with the tireless performance of Ian Taylor and the solid presence of Josh Chambers – the latter picking up a booking – helping to frustrate the home side’s rhythm. Substitutes Bradley Johnson and Quinn were introduced late on but couldn’t find a breakthrough.
