Last 6️⃣ meetings with Portsmouth

Ahead of Saturdays game we look at the last six meetings between the two clubs.

27/10/20 Portsmouth 4 The Cobblers 0

Ronan Curtis and Marcus Harness were also on target as Kenny Jackett’s men picked up their third win in eight days.

The hosts had a big let-off in the 16th minute when Ryan Watson blazed wide after finding himself clean through.

Marquis made Watson pay for his miss six minutes before half-time with a poacher’s finish after Ryan Williams had seen his initial shot saved.

Striker Marquis had a chance to double his tally two minutes later but was denied by Northampton goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell.

It took Marquis just two minutes of the second half to find the net with another follow-up effort after Mitchell could only parry Curtis’ header.

Curtis put the game out of Northampton’s reach in the 50th minute with a perfectly-placed strike from the edge of the penalty area.

Harness’ header from an Andy Cannon cross seven minutes from time completed the rout.

03/12/19 – Portsmouth 2 The Cobblers 1 – Trophy

Alex Bass made an early low save to deny Matt Warburton and Scott Wharton headed wide from a corner in a bright start from the Cobblers which saw them take the lead on 12 minutes, Michael Harriman heading home Joe Martin’s crossafter an excellent build up.

The home side were pressing and they were back on level terms through Leon Maloney’s close range header following a deflected cross into the box from Marcus Harness.

Marcus Harness had looked a threat all evening and with just over an hour played he fired the home side into the lead with an unstoppable volley into the top corner.

Arnold made another terrific save, this time denying Marquis as the home side looked to seal the victory with a third goal. In the end though two was enough for the holders to progress through to the next round.

30/12/17 – Portsmouth 3 The Cobblers 1

Pompey made it eight wins from their last 10 matches to stay in the play-off places heading into 2018.

The home side could have taken the lead after just six minutes when Hawkins was played in by Brett Pitman but visiting goalkeeper Matt Ingram was quick off his line to make the save.

Northampton then surprised the hosts when they went ahead in the 36th minute through Chris Long, who calmly slotted the ball past Luke McGee.

But Pompey hit back moments later through Matty Kennedy when he cut in from the left wing to drill a right-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Portsmouth then took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Hawkins headed Christian Burgess’ cross over Ingram’s head.

Hawkins got his second of the match to seal the points, arriving at the back post to nod in a Kennedy cross.

02/12/17 – Portsmouth 2 The Cobblers 0 – Trophy

After a fairly quiet opening half an hour in the lunchtime kick-off, Cornell made a good save to prevent Gareth Evans putting Portsmouth in front at a fairly sparsely populated Fratton Park. At the other end Christian Burgess made a good block to deny Chris Long after a pacy run from Hoskins.

Portsmouth took the lead on 41 minutes, Gareth Evans with a far post header following a quick counter-attack from the home side.

Chris Long, hobbling towards the end of the first half, was replaced at half-time by Sam Foley.

The Cobblers started the second half at a decent tempo and it took a terrific save from home goalkeeper Luke McGee to keep out a powerful Ash Taylor header from a Lewis McGugan free kick.

Stuart O’Keefe doubled Pompey’s lead just before the hour mark, driving a shot into the bottom corner.

Curtis Main had a chance to put the result beyond doubt but dragged his shot wide after being fed in by Conor Chaplin. With time ticking away Cornell then made a good double save to deny first Evans and then Chaplin on the follow-up to keep the scoreline at 2-0 and that’s how it finished.

12/09/2017 – The Cobblers 3 Portsmouth 1

Burnley loanee Long and Matt Crooks fired the Cobblers 2-0 up inside 32 minutes, but Pompey raised their game in the second half.

Matt Kennedy fired the south coast side back into it in the 49th minute, and although they went on to create several more chances, it was Long who made it 3-1 with 20 minutes remaining.

Northampton named an unchanged team from Saturday’s 1-0 win over Doncaster, while Portsmouth made one change, Conor Chaplin coming in to lead the attacking line for the injured Ollie Hawkins.

After a scrappy start in wet and windy conditions, Northampton took the lead on 18 minutes, when Long raced on to a Shaun McWilliams through ball and slipped the ball past Pompey goalkeeper Luke McGee, who was slow off his line.

Town doubled their advantage on 32 minutes, with Crooks glancing Matt Grimes’s inswinging free-kick from the right wing, the ball deflecting in off Pompey defender Matt Clarke.

The visitors pressed and probed, and twice almost reduced the arrears.

Cobblers defender Ash Taylor headed a Jamal Lowe cross against his own post, while just before the break goalkeeper Matt Ingram tipped Pompey midfielder Stuart O’Keefe’s long-range effort over.

Pompey did pull a goal back on 49 minutes, Kennedy firing home from 18 yards, and they created other chances but failed to take them.

In the 70th minute Northampton sealed the win, Long thrashing home his second at the far post following a Brendan Moloney cross.

07/05/16 – Portsmouth 1 The Cobblers 2

The Sky Bet League 2 champions took the lead in the 14th minute when defender Jack Whatmough diverted Nicky Adams’ centre into his own goal.

Pompey had pegged them back when Kal Naismith scored with a left-footed stunner, a thunderous swirled effort from 35 yards.

But Collins sent the 2,807 travelling fans home even happier when he tapped in left-back David Buchanan’s low cross.

Pompey midfielder Kieron Freeman saw a straight red, which will see him miss the play-offs, for a reckless two-footed lunge on John-Joe O’Toole, which despite not touching the player was out of control.

The home side earlier should have scored as Naismith somehow failed to beat Adam Smith with three efforts in a scramble after Ben Davies’ low cross.

The former Accrington man attempted to try the long-range trick which brought his goal but Smith was equal to it.

With Plymouth winning, Pompey will play their home play-off game with Argyle on Thursday before heading down the coast next Sunday.
