Ahead of Remembrance Day, we are taking a look at former Northampton Town players who served in the military during the First or Second World War…
Harry Springthorpe was one of those rare gems that pop up from time to time, a natural footballer who played the game for the love of it rather than the money.
He was a natural footballer and played for Stamford Town while still a schoolboy at Stamford grammar school. He worked for a bank and when he was transferred to this area Wolverton used his talents on the field, he then found his way to Northampton.
Despite his job sometimes restricting his appearances he soon made the first team spot his own. The crack amateur sides the Pilgrims spotted his talents and the Pirates took him on tour when they were playing in Europe.
His fame was becoming known nationwide when he was transferred to a bank in Grimsby The ‘Mariners’ soon took him on board and during his stay there he was capped for England at amateur level.
When the First World War broke out he joined the Lincolnshire regiment but sadly lost his life while on the SS Mercian, when it was torpedoed by a German submarine
