Cobblers Past

History Never Forgotten

Frank was born in Leeds on 26th. January 1940

His first job on leaving school was starting up the fires in Steam trains as an apprentice fireman. His debut for Halifax Reserves was v Harrogate Railway in the West Riding League Division 2

Frank claimed Halifax Town gave him a crate of Guinness a week to build up his strength. Before joining Queens Park Rangers several clubs made inquiries including Newcastle United, Everton, Blackpool & Norwich City.

Frank had been dropped from the Rangers team and was watching Rangers play the Cobblers at White City when the visitors centre

Forward, Bert llewellyn was carried off on his debut, Frank was signed to replace him. The 2 goals scored v Carlisle won the Cobblers the third division championship.

In a goalless draw at Orient the only shot on target was a dart the Frank received in his back from the crowd,

Swindon & Carlisle agreed the transfer of Frank over the phone, and told the striker it was up to personal terms, So he drove the 250 miles from Swindon to Carlisle, agreed terms, drove back, and told the family

Just like at Northampton two seasons earlier Frank scored a brace of goals , this time v Mansfield that won Carlisle the third division championship. When Frank was at Oldham his chairman was Ken Bates later chairman of Chelsea

On his return to Northampton he scored a hat-trick v  Bristol Rovers and still finished on the losing side Rovers won 5-4. Leicester bought Allan Clarke from Fulham in 1968 and the London club wanted Frank as part of the deal, he was reluctant as City was going on tour to Zambia, it was agreed he would sign after the tour.

Frank was the first player to have played for the Cobblers 3 times since Herbert Chapman in 1907. Three of Frank and Aileen’s children were born in Northampton, each at their different spells at Northampton. Richard 1963, David 1967, & Vicky 1970!

Frank wound down his career with Kettering town. In one match   v Wimbledon he was kicked all over the pitch by a Wimbledon player & near the end of the match turned and gave him a right hander that knocked the player out. He turned and made his way down the tunnel before the referee could reach him to the applause of the Kettering faithful,

Frank died of cancer in Louisburg, Ireland on 8th. August 2003
