Cobblers Past and Northampton Town Football Club are saddened to learn the passing of former player and physio Denis Casey.

Forward Denis was on the Cobblers books and made several appearances for the reserves during the 1961-62 season.

He moved on to Wellingborough Town and then moved to Banbury United for the start of the 1974/75, Denis occupied various positions either in defence or midfield during his three seasons with the Banbury, making just over 100 Southern League appearances, scoring seven goals. He was there club captain during season 1976/77.

“The great thing about Denis was he worked so hard. He learnt a lot form Charlie McCormick in his time and had worked with other people before me. I knew he was very close with Graham Carr for instance, but it made no difference to his attitude.”

Theo Foley wrote in Denis Testimonial match program.

Before joining Nuneaton Borough he completed his diploma in Physiotherapist,, he joined Nuneaton as the clubs physiotherapist, When Graham Carr moved from the managers post at Nuneaton to re-join the Cobblers he brought Denis with him, which he held until 2008.

“ We have had our fair share of injuries over the last two seasons and the pace of the game nowadays is such that it has been very hard work for Denis. He worked himself into the ground last season to such an extent that he was ill for a fortnight in March.”

Ian Atkins wrote in Denis Testimonial match program.

During the late 1980’s he was awarded a testimonial match v Rushden & Diamonds. He spent nearly 25 years as club Physiotherapist under ten managers. After football He ran a smallholding on the outskirts of the town.

He was a popular figure with players, staff and supporters alike and will be very sadly missed.

Our thoughts are with all who knew Denis.
