Some brilliant stories from Eddie McGoldrick, one of the stars of Graham Carr’s 1986-87 4th Division title winners. Eddie talks us through the characters and skill sets of the players that saw Cobblers steamroll through the league. His is a story of a meteoric rise from playing at Nuneaton with the likes of Trevor Morley before performing for Northampton and earning himself a move to Crystal Palace.
McGoldrick had a great spell at Selhurst Park, becoming a fans favourite. He talks frankly about a bad injury and the hard work of bouncing back to earn catch the eye of Arsenal.
Eddie was part of a talented Gunners side, playing in some memorable European nights v Standard Liege & Parma and moving into the Republic of Ireland setup. He talks about fulfilling a childhood dream of playing for Emerald Isle and resisting the advances of the England setup.
That culminated in being named in the Ireland squad for World Cup USA 1994 and Eddie recounts the camaraderie of the Irish group at the time, managed by the great Jack Charlton.
Hard work underpinned Eddie’s success and he discusses his role as a coach to the next generation of players and imparting his work ethic that saw him go from part-time football to the Premier League.
