We take a look back the Cobblers Boxing Day fixtures.

2019/20 – Crawley 4 Northampton 0

After the match got the go-ahead following two pitch inspections, Crawley started on the front foot and eventually took the lead in superb style in the 27th minute when Nathan Ferguson rifled in his fifth goal of the season from a tight angle.

Crawley keeper Glenn Morris showed alertness on the hour mark to claim a dangerous centre by Charlie Goode, but Bez Lubala struck two minutes later to double the Reds’ lead with a low shot into the corner for his 10th goal of the season.

The hosts continued to press and Palmer fired wide before a fierce shot by Ferguson was parried by keeper Arnold, who then came to the Cobblers’ rescue by saving a goal-bound shot by Palmer with his legs.

Palmer was on target, however, in the 80th minute when he made it 3-0 at the near post following a cross by substitute Mason Bloomfield.

Bloomfield was on hand to add the fourth three minutes later after a defensive mistake by Scott Wharton.

To add to the Cobblers’ woe as they slipped out of the League Two play-off places. they had Shaun McWilliams and Harry Smith taken off on stretchers in stoppage time.

2018/19 – Northampton 1 Swindon 1

The opening goal came after just six minutes when Kevin Van Veen was released on the right flank and his superb cross presented a simple finish for Williams from close range.

Visiting goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux had to be at his best to prevent Northampton from stretching their lead, reacting smartly to keep out Van Veen and Williams in quick succession.

Matt Crooks side-footed off target and David Buchanan saw an effort blocked while Michael Doughty fired against the post with Swindon’s only chance of the half.

But the visitors improved in the second period and levelled through Anderson’s crisp finish from Elijah Adebayo’s lay-off.

There was almost a late winner but Aaron Pierre cleared off the line and Jack Bridge smacked the crossbar.

2017/18 – Doncaster 3 Northampton 0

Veteran midfielder James Coppinger marked his return from injury with a goal before Niall Mason scored his second penalty in as many games to give Rovers a cushion at half-time. Andy Butler made sure of the three points just after the hour mark.

Butler, Ben Whiteman and Tommy Rowe all went close to giving Doncaster the lead before Coppinger did, bundling in from close range in the 33rd minute after John Marquis and Alfie May both had efforts saved.

Northampton were rather toothless throughout but Shaun McWilliams drew a fine low save from Ian Lawlor.

Moments later, Matt Grimes clipped Marquis from behind in the box and Mason drilled home the penalty to make it 2-0 on 43 minutes.

Doncaster were comfortable after the break with Northampton struggling to threaten.

And they put the game to bed in the 66th minute when Butler forced the ball home after a Mathieu Baudry header was cleared off the line.

2016/17 – Oxford 0 Northampton 1

Substitute Harry Beautyman knocked Matt Taylor’s corner back across goal and Richards stuck out a foot to flick the ball home at the far post.

That brought an end to Oxford’s eight-game unbeaten run, but the U’s only had themselves to blame with some wayward shooting and poor decision-making in the final third, as they failed to find the net at home for the first time this season.

Northampton created the better of what few chances there were in the opening hour.

Taylor’s stinging shot from 20 yards was too hot to handle for U’s goalkeeper Simon Eastwood but his defenders were on hand to clear.

Cobblers centre-half Lewis Nyatanga unbelievably headed a Taylor corner over the bar from just five yards.

At the other end Chris Maguire threatened from free-kicks and the Scot also forced Adam Smith into a smart save down at his right post, but Oxford struggled to get beyond the visitors’ well-marshalled defence.

In the second half it was again Northampton who almost broke the deadlock, Paul Anderson somehow failing to turn in a Richards header back across the face of the goal.

2014/15 Northampton 2 Bury 3

Bury beat Northampton to end a run of seven games without a win as both sides finished with 10 men.

Northampton took the lead when Ivan Toney crossed for Marc Richards, but Andrew Tutte levelled from 25 yards.

Former Crystal Palace midfielder Tom Soares headed the Shakers ahead and Danny Mayor lashed in a third.

Toney and Hayden White were then both sent off for an altercation behind the goal and, though Chris Hackett scored from a corner, Bury held on to win.

The Cobblers have now lost four League Two games in a row and have only won two of the last 12.
