Northampton Town have confirmed that Marc Richards has left his position on the club’s coaching staff, bringing to an end another chapter of his long association with the Cobblers.
Richards is a familiar and popular figure among Northampton supporters, having enjoyed two spells as a player before returning to Sixfields in a coaching capacity following his retirement from professional football.
After hanging up his boots, Richards rejoined the club’s academy setup in 2020 as Youth Team Assistant Coach before progressing through the ranks. He was later appointed Assistant Professional Development Phase Coach and, in 2021, made the step up to the first-team coaching staff under Jon Brady. More recently, he spent time working with the club’s Under-18 side as part of his coaching development.
His departure ends a coaching spell that saw him help the Cobblers achieve promotion from League Two in 2022-23 and establish themselves back in League One.
Richards’ connection with Northampton Town stretches back more than two decades. He first arrived at Sixfields in 2003, scoring 10 goals in 53 appearances during an initial spell with the club before moving on to continue a successful Football League career.
He returned to Northampton in 2014 and quickly became a key figure in Chris Wilder’s side. Across four seasons, Richards made 123 appearances and scored 44 goals, helping the Cobblers to the League Two title in 2015-16. He was also named the club’s Player of the Year in 2014-15 after finishing as the team’s leading goalscorer with 18 goals.
A respected leader on and off the pitch, Richards captained the side and played an important role in one of the most successful periods in the club’s recent history. His second spell at Sixfields came to an end in January 2018, but his connection with Northampton Town was far from over.
In total, Richards made 176 appearances across his two playing spells with the Cobblers, scoring 54 goals, before returning to help develop the next generation of players through the club’s academy and first-team setup.
Everyone at Cobblers Past would like to thank Marc for his contribution to Northampton Town both as a player and a coach and wish him every success in the next stage of his career.
